Writers in Tech ranks #3140 on The B2B Podcast Index with a substance score of 61.0 out of 100, scored across 1 recent episode. It scores highest on guest caliber and insight density. Mary van Ogtrop is a legitimate senior practitioner - Director of Product Writing at Duolingo for six-plus years with hands-on product impact - which is solid real-world credibility. However, the conversation never pushes her into the depth her seniority should be able to deliver, leaving much of her operational knowledge untapped.
Averaged across 1 recently scored episode, with cited evidence.
A handful of genuinely interesting ideas surface - the 'meet the moment' principle, the internal Copybot tool, the tastemaker pivot - but they are heavily diluted by lengthy personal anecdotes (childhood novels, babysitters club, maternity leave Rip Van Winkle story) and generic AI commentary that produces no actionable takeaway. The insight-per-minute ratio for a 28-minute episode is low.
“we've kind of pivoted from being writers of everything to being tastemakers and saying here everyone have a piece of what we know without us having to do every single thing”
“it was a metrics win. I forget what the numbers were, but it was like, huh? All right, copy, let's go”
The 'prompt is a style guide' framing is a genuinely clever reframe, and positioning writers as tastemakers rather than producers is a useful lens, but the bulk of the episode recycles well-worn UX writing arguments: language differentiates products, clear writing equals clear thinking, writers are naturally good at prompting AI.
“a prompt is a style guide, if I may. It's a style guide for, uh, one, um, output or, uh, one kind of output”
“clear writing represents clear thinking”
Mary van Ogtrop is a legitimate senior practitioner - Director of Product Writing at Duolingo for six-plus years with hands-on product impact - which is solid real-world credibility. However, the conversation never pushes her into the depth her seniority should be able to deliver, leaving much of her operational knowledge untapped.
“I lead product writing at Duolingo. So my remit is the product experience using the app. And my team is actually quite small”
“She was the driving force behind Copybot. She's incredible”
The episode is almost entirely anecdotal and qualitative; the one concrete experiment - changing 'you are correct' copy - is explicitly stripped of its numbers ('I forget what the numbers were'). Copybot is the only named, specific artifact. No retention figures, DAU impacts, experiment timelines, or team sizes are provided despite the guest having access to all of these.
“it was a metrics win. I forget what the numbers were, but it was like, huh? All right, copy, let's go”
“we built a tool to help. We call it an AI powered product writer that teams around the company can lean on. It's called Copybot”
The host repeatedly turns the microphone back on themselves (the 'Humans of AI' Instagram project, their own client struggles, their own writing style), asks soft biographical questions ('Would you like to write a book one day?'), and never follows up on the most interesting dangling thread - the metrics win with no numbers. One decent structural question appears but is not pressed.
“Would you like to write a book one day?”
“That's amazing”
