Lead magnets remain essential for growing email lists, but the landscape has shifted dramatically. Today's audiences expect genuine value and quick wins, not generic five-minute checklists or easily-Googled information. Tracy Beavers, host of Create Your Online Business Success, addresses a common misconception among entrepreneurs: that struggling list growth means needing to create another lead magnet. In reality, the problem is typically visibility and promotion frequency. Most entrepreneurs spend hours building a lead magnet, mention it once or twice, then move on - missing the fact that their audience may have only seen it once. Beavers emphasizes that list growth compounds through repeated, consistent promotion across multiple channels: social media posts (at least 1-2 weekly featuring a lead magnet), podcast episodes, email to existing subscribers, live social appearances, summits, and collaborations. Lead magnets extend beyond PDFs to include podcasts, YouTube channels, free Facebook groups with membership entry questions, and newsletters. The key is perceived value and delivering quick wins. She teaches her students in Business Visibility Made Easy to promote lead magnets through teaching and serving - answering community questions and offering relevant resources - rather than direct selling. Consistency and patience drive list growth, not constant new creation.
At minimum, promote your lead magnet 1-2 times per week through various channels (social media, email, podcast, live appearances). The best approach is promoting through teaching and serving - answering community questions and offering relevant resources naturally within conversations.
Lead magnets include podcasts, YouTube channels, free Facebook groups with membership entry questions designed to capture emails, newsletters, and any top-of-funnel strategy that builds your list. The key is that it's something valuable enough that people will exchange their email address for it.
Most entrepreneurs spend hours creating a lead magnet but only promote it once or twice, then move on to create something new. The problem isn't the lead magnet itself - it's a visibility and promotion problem. People can't opt in for what they don't see repeatedly.
Today's audiences want something that delivers a genuine quick win and helps them make progress on a real problem. They won't opt in for generic information they could easily find through Google or AI - they need to feel like they actually learned something useful.
Yes - you can promote your lead magnet through email to existing subscribers as a fun way to get them to reply and start a conversation, opening up direct engagement with people already in your funnel.
Our reviewer’s read on each dimension, with quotes from the episode.
The episode contains several useful reminders about lead magnet strategy (focus on promotion over creation, ensure value delivery, consistency matters) but these are presented as general principles rather than novel insights. The core thesis - that promotion matters more than creation - is valid but not particularly surprising to experienced B2B operators. Most substance is repetitive reinforcement of established practices.
List growth doesn't usually come from creating more. It comes from promoting better and promoting longer.
Right about the time you start to feel like a broken record is right about the time your audience is starting to pay attention.
The framing of lead magnets as any top-of-funnel strategy (podcast, Facebook group, newsletter) offers slight freshness, but the core advice - create valuable freebies and promote them repeatedly - is standard funnel marketing doctrine. The episode recycles conventional wisdom without contrarian insight or first-principles thinking that would distinguish it from hundreds of similar marketing podcasts.
A lead magnet is really any top of funnel strategy. It could be your podcast, like this show right here for me.
Because it's serve us. It's not selling. You're not saying, hey, you need to come buy my thing.
This is a solo host episode with no guest. Tracy Beavers is positioned as a coach/consultant but the transcript provides no evidence of operating at significant scale, building a major company, or executing the strategies she recommends at enterprise level. Without a credible practitioner guest, the episode lacks the authority that comes from someone who has actually scaled a business.
I'm your host, Tracy Beavers.
That's what I help my clients with in my one-to-one coaching and my students inside Business Visibility Made Easy.
The episode lacks concrete data, named case studies, or specific metrics to support its claims. References to personal experience ('I remember early in my business...', 'some of my biggest list growth') are anecdotal without numbers, timelines, or quantifiable results. No specific companies, conversion rates, or results are cited.
I remember early in my business thinking if my list wasn't growing, the answer must be to create yet another free lead magnet.
Some of my biggest list growth in business has come from things like my Facebook group and my podcast.
This is a monologue with no guest interaction, follow-up questions, or productive dialogue. The host speaks at the audience rather than engaging them in conversation. There are rhetorical questions posed to listeners but no actual responses or debate. The format is presentation-heavy with frequent self-promotion plugs that interrupt the teaching flow.

By the way, if you're not in it, you need to be in it. What are you doing with your life?

Send Tracy a Text Message! :) Are lead magnets dead? The truth is, lead magnets aren’t dead. What’s changed is your audience’s expectations. Years ago, a simple checklist or cheat sheet might have been enough to get someone excited to join your email list. But today’s audiences want lead magnets that are truly valuable, practical, and worth their time. In this episode, I’m breaking down what’s really happening with lead magnets today and why the biggest issue isn’t that lead magnets don’t work anymore. The real problem is that most entrepreneurs either create low-value lead magnets or they don’t promote them consistently. I’m also sharing something many people overlook: lead magnets aren’t just PDFs or guides. Your Facebook group, your podcast, your blog, and even your newsletter can function as powerful top-of-funnel lead magnets when they’re set up correctly.

I was on a podcast interview the other day and the host asked me, are lead magnets dead? And you know, it took me a second to reply because no one had ever asked me that question. Lately, there's been a lot of discussion about how courses might be dead, which isn't true, by the way, but I hadn't heard anyone say that lead magnets might be dead. And the answer is no.
Lead magnets are absolutely not dead. Now, what is a lead magnet, my dear friend? Remember, it's a freebie. It's something that we use as a top-of-funnel strategy to entice our ideal clients to join our list.
What is dead, though, in the world of lead magnets is the low value ones, the kind that take five minutes for us to make, and they don't really help anyone with anything. Today's audiences are savvy. They're smart, and they want something different. They want lead magnets and freebies that are genuinely helpful, practical, and worth their time.
So today we're going to talk about what actually works now in the world of lead magnets. Ready to grow your online business without losing your mind? You're in the right spot, my friend. Welcome to Create Your Online Business Success.
I'm your host, Tracy Beavers. And this show is all about practical strategies, creative ideas, and sanity-saving solutions that you can use right now. Let's crank up the dial on your business growth and make it fun. Let's create your online business success.
Okay, my friends, so are lead magnets dead? No, I say it not. But here's what has changed the expectations of our audience. Because years ago, when I started into this online space, a checklist worked as a lead magnet, as a freebie.
So, and also for this show, I every time I say lead magnet, I'm talking about a freebie. So a cheat sheet, that worked. A simple PDF worked. But today, at least for my audience, you expect more, right?
You want something that actually helps you make progress, actually helps you have a quick win. And that's what your audience wants too. Your audience expects more. They want something valuable.
You don't have to give them the whole farm, but they do want something that gives them a quick win. If someone downloads your lead magnet, they should feel like they actually learned something useful. Not like they got something they could have Googled in five minutes or asked their favorite AI tool for. People guard their inbox now more than ever.
Oh my gosh. So they ask themselves, is this worth my email address? And that's why your freebie needs to deliver a real small win. So let's talk about something I hear from my students and clients all the time.
This is what I hear. Tracy, I think I need another lead magnet. And when I ask why, they tell me it's because the one they have no one wants. But when I review the lead magnet funnel with them and dive deeper into the issue, we end up finding out that the lead magnet itself is really juicy.
The problem is they have a visibility problem because they aren't promoting it enough. So let's talk about um what works with lead magnets. Most entrepreneurs are doing something like this. They're gonna spend hours creating a lead magnet, then they share it once, maybe share it twice, then they move on and they start creating a new one.
All right, my friend, have you done that? I know I was tempted to do it in the beginning. But listen, list growth doesn't usually come from creating more. It comes from promoting better and promoting longer.
And you and I may feel like we talk about our stuff ad nauseum, like hundreds of times, but your audience may have only seen it once. And people can't opt in for what they can't see, right? So we have to promote all of our stuff, free stuff and paid stuff, um, in way more than it feels comfortable. Right about the time you start to feel like a broken record is right about the time your audience is starting to pay attention.
And listen, I've been there. I remember early in my business thinking if my list wasn't growing, the answer must be to create yet another free lead magnet. So I'd make something new, a guide, a worksheet, something helpful, put it out there, and then after a week or two, I'd move on. But eventually I realized the issue wasn't the lead magnet itself.
The issue was I had a visibility problem. I had a promotion problem. People weren't seeing it enough. So that's when I started focusing on visibility and repetition, which is exactly what I help my clients with today in business visibility made easy.
You guys love creating new things. I know you do. I do too. It feels productive.
It feels like we're doing something for our business, right? Feels successful. But your audience, my audience, they don't need something new every week. They don't want something new every week.
They need to see the same helpful resource multiple, multiple times. So you can promote, let's talk about promoting a lead magnet. There's lots of different ways you can promote a lead magnet. We just need to make sure we're doing it enough.
So I'm talking about social media posts. And what I help my students in Business Visibility Made Easy understand is that at least one or two of their posts every week needs to be about a free lead magnet that they have. You could post, um, you could promote your lead magnet through your podcast episodes. I mean, you guys know that I am giving you something that's a top-of-funnel strategy for me every week.
Sometimes it's just an invitation to my free Facebook group. Other times it's a free lead magnet that I had that pertains to what I was talking about. You can promote your lead magnets through email, even. And what I mean by that is using them as a way, a fun way to get your clients to reply back in the inbox.
So they're already on your list. So the lead magnets have already done their job by getting your person on your list, but now we're gonna use them to promote an email in a fun way to get your audience to reply back for the thing you're offering. And that opens up a conversation. You can promote your lead magnets when you go live on social media, um, when you are on a summit answering questions or you're being interviewed in the DMs, in collaborations, guest appearances.
Every time you mention it, a different person hears it and sees it. And that's how visibility and list growth start to compound. So let's talk about what a good lead magnet might be. Since we've just established they are no longer dead.
A lot of people think lead magnets are just PDFs, like a nice little Canva document or a Google Doc or something like that. And they can be, but they can really be much more than that. A lead magnet is really any top of funnel strategy. It could be your podcast, like this show right here for me.
This is a top of funnel strategy. You're coming into the top of my funnel by finding me on your favorite podcast player. And then you start listening and you're like, oh, I think I like this girl. She's pretty smart with business and sales and visibility and list growth.
And then I offer you something cool and you land on my list. So it could be your podcast, it could be your YouTube channel, it could be your free Facebook group like mine, because when you set up the membership entry questions, the way that I teach in business visibility made easy, the entry questions grow your list. But some of my biggest list growth in business has come from things like my Facebook group and my podcast. Someone, as I just mentioned, you discover the podcast, you listen to an episode, and then you join my email list.
So that's a lead magnet. Same with your Facebook group. Those membership entry questions, the way I teach you to set them up, people will want to give you their email address. And now they're on your list.
So I want you to think about the top of funnel items that you have. And don't forget, those are lead magnets too. And all oftentimes people ask me if their newsletter can be a lead magnet. And I used to say no, it really wasn't, but lately I've been seeing some really juicy newsletters, and I've been opting in for them.
So I think I've changed my tune a little bit about newsletters. I think they can be a top-of-funnel lead magnet if they're really, really good and if they are used in the right way. The key to having people want to opt into something you're offering is that perceived value and giving your people those quick wins. And listen, I know you're probably thinking, okay, Tracy, how often do I need to promote promote this thing?
People are going to think I'm pushy. They're going to think I'm salesy. No, no, no, my friend. Look, the easiest way to promote your lead magnets is through teaching and helping.
Let me give you an example. Let's say you're in a free Facebook group like mine, the Be a Confident Entrepreneur Group. By the way, if you're not in it, you need to be in it. What are you doing with your life?
I want you to come join us. The link is in the show notes. It's also called Be a Confident Entrepreneur. If you want to just head over to Facebook and find it or look me up, Tracy Lane Beavers, and then you'll find it that way.
But anyway, somebody asks a question in a Facebook group that you're in, and you're you answer the question and you say something very helpful, like, I help my clients and students with this same issue all the time. This is a really great question. And I actually have a free guide that will help you break this down. If you if you'd like to have it, I'm happy to send it to you.
Now, granted, if that's allowed in the group. Some groups I'm in, they are so tight with the rules, it's ridiculous. But we can use that lead magnet in a way to serve other people, is what I'm getting at. Because it's serve us.
It's not selling. You're not saying, hey, you need to come buy my thing. You need to come join my program. You're saying, I've got this podcast episode, or I've got this YouTube video, or I've got this Facebook group that you might benefit from.
You know, if that sounds good to you, let me know. I'll send you the link. So before you decide to abandon the lead magnets that we have, thinking that lead magnets might be dead, or thinking that your lead magnets just are stinkers, because I've created some stinkers, ask me. Um, I want you to ask yourself this have I truly made this free thing really visible, like truly visible, week in, week out, consistently to my audience.
Does my audience know it even exists? And then I want you to think through some creative ways to ramp up the promotion of your lead magnets. Because lead magnets are not dead. But the days of creating one, mentioning it once or twice, and expecting your email list to explode are definitely behind us.
Creating the lead magnet, that's the easy part. Promoting it consistently, that's what grows your email list. And we all know consistency and patience, neither of those are sexy. But it's the truth.
Those are the things that are gonna make you successful in business and grow your list. And if you need help with this strategy, I want you to reach out to me by DM or email. This is my jam, y'all. It's what I help my clients with in my one-to-one coaching and my students inside Business Visibility Made Easy.

Here's my call to action, giving you a free lead magnet. See what I'm doing here? It's very meta. Where are your lead magnets leading your audience?
Because I've got a very fun free training that I put together for you. It's a short video and a PDF so you can get a quick win. And you get to dive deep into this topic when it comes to your lead magnets. Are your lead magnets leading your clients to the next right step with you?
