Ryan Staley, an AI transformation consultant working with companies spanning $30M to $20B in revenue, breaks down Claude Skills - Anthropic's new feature enabling no-code customization of AI in under five minutes - and explains why it will outpace MCP servers for most use cases. The episode covers three practical examples: a Slack GIF creator, a data journalism skill that accessed US Census Bureau APIs to analyze AI's impact on employment with visualizations and executive summaries, and a Medic sales qualification framework that scores deals, predicts win probability, and generates 30-day action plans. Staley demonstrates uploading skills via simple drag-and-drop, shows the downloaded skill package structure (MD files, templates, assets), and clarifies the performance difference between Skills (token-efficient, context-aware), custom instructions (static, always-on), and MCP servers (heavyweight, best for integrations). Ideal for B2B operators, go-to-market leaders, sales teams working large deals, and anyone building specialized AI agents without code.

Key takeaways

  • →Claude Skills are more token-efficient than MCP servers and custom instructions, making them the best option for most operationalization needs.
  • →Skills automatically trigger based on context and can generate comprehensive outputs like reports, visualizations, and scoring frameworks without explicit requests.
  • →You can create custom skills by simply asking Claude to create one with a brief description, which generates a downloadable zip file with all necessary documentation and assets.
  • →The MEDIC sales qualification skill demonstrates predictive modeling capabilities, scoring deal health and estimating win probability automatically for enterprise sales opportunities.

Questions this episode answers

How do Claude Skills compare to MCP servers in terms of token usage and efficiency?

Claude Skills are the most token-efficient option, requiring setup but not continuously consuming tokens like MCP servers, which are described as heavyweight and always-running. MCP servers are better reserved for connecting or transforming content between systems like Notion and the LLM.

What does a Claude Skill package include after download?

A Claude Skill downloads as a ZIP file containing MD files for the AI model to understand the skill, plus assets such as templates (deal review, qualification scorecards), reference documents, workflow decision trees, and quick tips - all auto-generated without being explicitly requested.

Can you show an example of how the Medic sales qualification skill scores a deal?

The Medic skill automatically scores deals on a scale of 11 to 21, assesses budget, authority, and critical gap, assigns deal health status (red/yellow/green), predicts win probability (e.g., 35-45%), and generates a rationale, priority actions, next meeting agenda, and owner assignment - all from a brief opportunity description.

Do Claude Skills work with Claude Code for tasks beyond text generation?

Yes, Staley confirms that skills work with Claude Code and are beginning to be tested for broader applications beyond coding, including go-to-market and non-coding tasks, making them a gateway to building specialized agents.

How do you create and upload a custom Claude Skill?

Type "create a Claude Skill" followed by a brief explanation of what you want (e.g., sales process, data analysis), Claude auto-generates the full skill package with all necessary files and structure, then download the ZIP and drag-and-drop it into the Skills upload area to toggle on and use immediately.

Insight Density

5 / 20

The episode is almost entirely a screen-share product tutorial with very little non-obvious analysis. The one semi-substantive claim - that Claude Skills is more token-efficient than MCP servers or always-on custom instructions - is stated but never quantified or explained mechanistically, leaving the operator no smarter about when or why to make the tradeoff.

MCP servers are always running in their heavyweight. I'm thinking this is the best way to operationalize most of it.
this is a massive context lever

Originality

4 / 20

The content is a first-look product demo dressed in hype language ('bigger than MCP,' 'paradigm shift,' 'massive explosion coming') with no contrarian argument, no first-principles reasoning, and no unexpected angle. The comparison graphic between custom instructions, Skills, and MCP is the only structured original contribution, and it is extremely shallow.

it's going to be bigger than mcps
I think there's a massive explosion coming in this space

Guest Caliber

5 / 20

This is a solo monologue by the host, who cites enterprise AI deployment work across companies from $30M to $20B in revenue - giving him some practitioner credibility - but the episode itself demonstrates no depth of that experience; he is narrating a product UI, not drawing on hard-won operational knowledge.

I have been basically deploying AI transformation for organizations ranging from 30 million, all the way up to 20 billion in revenue for go to market teams, executives
one of the most beautiful things about what I do is I get to look at tools like this, stress test them, find out the use cases

Specificity & Evidence

6 / 20

The MEDDIC walkthrough provides a concrete hypothetical scenario with real numbers (2,500-person SaaS, 40% churn, 25% target, two competitors, 35 - 45% win probability), but these are AI-generated outputs, not validated real-world data. The host offers no client case studies, measured ROI, or comparative benchmarks from actual deployments.

VP of Customer Success at a 2500 person SAS company. Reach out. After seeing our webinar. They have a 40% churn. The CEO wants it below by 20 or uh, wants it below 25% by Q3. They're evaluating two competitors.
win probability 35 to 45%

Conversational Craft

2 / 20

There is no conversation - this is a disorganized solo screen-share with repeated hesitations, lost files, and mid-sentence corrections. No guest means no probing questions, no pushback, and no tension; the host challenges nothing, including the AI-generated outputs he is displaying as evidence.

Actually this is where I designed it, so I apologize for that.
screw it, I'll just pull it up right now

Speaker A: Claude just released, uh, a game changing feature that lets you customize AI for your business in under five minutes with no coding required. This was along with 4.5 that was just released, but it's called Claude Skills. Okay. And it's going to be bigger than mcps. Here's the questions that you'll know by the end of the video. Know how to use Claude Skills to supercharge your AI workflows, understand the difference between Skills and mcp, build your own custom skills, and then I'll even walk you through three examples that I created that are super insightful, easy, and uh, I'm blown away with this because not of just what's about to happen with Claude with this, but the whole agent world as well. This is one of those foundational levers that I think will move mountains as time goes on. So purpose of this video though is really show you how these skills will present a paradigm shift for AI agent capabilities and then give you this to leverage your own specialized AI agents. Okay, those that don't know me, my name is Ryan Staley. I have been basically deploying AI transformation for organizations ranging from 30 million, all the way up to 20 billion in revenue for go to market teams, executives, you name it. And one of the most beautiful things about what I do is I get to look at tools like this, stress test them, find out the use cases, and I'm going to get into that too today. So let me start sharing my screen with you because I think this is going to be really easy for you to jump on and just getting involved with right from the get go. I think, um, one of the things that I'll talk about is there's a problem that folks are running into with MCP servers. And that problem is essentially that it's sucking up a ton of tokens. So that's one of the things that I've found and heard to be problematic. But at the same time, uh, there's some beautiful things within these areas, within Skills. Okay, so we, what you're going to see over here is this is my screen. Um, I have clicked on right here, which is the settings, clicked over in the settings and then I went into Capabilities. So what you're going to see here is Capabilities has a lot of different areas that you could get focused on. Okay. So we're going to mostly pan down and go over to the Skills. And what you're going to see is there's some that I've added in here like medic data, journalism, notion, researcher documentation, and then there's a lot that are pre built by Anthropic. As you see, it's named Anthropic and you could toggle these on. So for example, if you wanted a brand guidelines builder that they're leveraging, you could basically toggle this on and use it. Okay, so these are all the different capabilities I'm going to get into in a few minutes how we could create and upload your own skill, what it looks like, what's involved, and then the outcomes you can create. So first of all, we're going to get now over into. I have a folder called Skill Test Threads because I've been doing a lot of work with these and I want to make sure that I have it all organized in one place. One of the easiest ones is a Slack GIF or GIF creator basically that's embedded within what Anthropic had. So I'll go from like simple to complex. So if we click click on this, of course I went after my favorite. If I don't hit my number, I'll be living in a van down by the river. So this is supposed to be Chris Farley. Okay. As you could tell, this is really rough. It's kind of funny though, and comical just with how it is. As you will, I haven't spent a lot of time on the GIF generator but or GIF generator. But all you can see is this is all I asked once I enabled it. I said create an animated GIF for in Slack for Chris Farley for his running style with the text saying, I even have a typo. If I don't hit my number, I'll be living in a van down by the river. Okay. Like is Matt fully impersonation. So that was one of the examples that I ran. That's super simple. Now we're going to get into more complicated. Right. So one of the things that I did is I created uh, a data journalism skill effectively. So I'm going to show you the output of this because creating these skills sometimes takes a while, but I think you'll be impressed with it. Okay. Actually this is where I designed it, so I apologize for that. So as you can see here, I asked to create this and then I say access the US Census Bureau APIs, download GSB, sorry, CSV, JSON and Excel files and basically some details in here. Now I had Claude help me come up with some of those ideas for it. But then I basically just said create a skill. Okay. That's all I have to do is say create a Claude skill on blank, right? And then with a brief explanation, that's a much, much simpler way. But as you could see it went through all these different steps which I thought was, was pretty impressive. So I mean if you look at, there's a few there, 2, 4, so 32 steps they went through and then it basically created a whole skill package installation guide. Now what these skill package installation guides are basically it's like a zip file that what you'll be able to do is and I could even pull one up. But basically what the zip file is is it has documents in there where it basically describes what the whole skill is. So actually you know what, screw it, I'll just pull it up right now. I have a lot in here. All right. Actually you know, I'm going to do, I'm going to get back into this a little bit later because it's, it's. I uh, in the effort of being so organized I moved it. So here's what it created though to go through. It created just different examples that goes through, creates this file and then what you're going to want to do even created a file structure which is pretty interesting. You just gotta click download, right? So that's all you gotta do. So that zip file is what you need to download. Okay, so now what I'm going to do is go back to like what actually happens when we use this. All right, um, here it is, I decided and I'll show you the prompt that I use which is very simple. But basically what this whole skills capability does is it's a massive context lever. Let me close this temporarily. This is the output, but I'll show you a visual as well. Okay, so this. Use the data journalism skill and identify the top trends in data of how jobs have been affected from AI in Q3 of 20. Uh, 25. Right. So what you're going to see here is once again it goes through that multi step process where there's a lot of detail and steps and then it basically identifies the trends just from last quarter. So then what it does is it creates a complete report, an executive summary, data files which like I didn't even ask it to do that. But that was because what's built in the skill is to be able to do it. So if we take a look at this, let's just look at the view, the complete analysis report and what you're going to see in the complete report is it has a brief executive summary, it's got key findings, right? It talks about explicit jobs with numbers and metrics around what's Being changed, how it's working, all those areas. Okay. So it even comes down and brings these, these tables which I thought were highly impactful. Um, it looks at the change in, you know, the year to date in terms of the sector comparison and other areas at the same time. Like we look at visualizations which I didn't actually dig in on this. I missed this the first time because I was trying to dig through it. But it's got, uh, different visualizations that we're going to see over here. So that's the layoff trend, which actually looks like it decreased a little bit in August. Oh, here it is. Job cuts by sector. So this is 24 versus 25. Right. So 24, 25 is way higher, which is pretty interesting. It's got age group data and then occupation Data and then Q3 monthly data. Now those are data files. Actually the other areas are on the visualizations right here. Employment changes. So looks which ones. Engineers, financial advisors, database admins are up. All these other areas are down. And then industry risk versus adoption. I think this is pretty cool. Like this just kind of shows where the sweet spots are for, you know, opportunities. Right. So basically AI, uh, adoption versus job risk profile. Basically, uh, what I'm seeing is like you're more positive if you're down in the green, you're negative. If you're up over here, that's negative two. So I thought once again this was pretty useful. And then one of the other things that I did is created all these visuals, created all these docs just from it so I could download them. But uh, then I just said, hey, can you use the artifacts skill to visualize this report? Okay, so that was one of the things that there is a skill by anthropic on visualization. And so I use that. And what I had to do is now there was an error message when it popped up. So I'm like, all right, it's all black. And then I went through and it created, recreated this whole visual. So I'm going to show you the final visual of what it looks like. So you could see. And this is code, right? So it's HTML, but basically it created kind of like a uh, rolling infographic, which is where we started. Text sector Companies now blame AI openly, right. Since 23, all these different areas. And then it's got spreading beyond tech. And then the bottom line, you know, 20 million US workers need retraining by 2020. I think it's way higher than that. But that's one of the areas that I think is Gonna explode my business. So it's a good thing, right? Okay. So the last but not least is I'm gonna walk through how to actually create a skill. So one of the areas that we're gonna do is Medic Medic is a sales qualification framework. If you're working a large deal or a bigger deal. And what we're going to do here is this is. I'm going to show you how simple this is so you can create this and deploy a skill for yourself. So all I asked it to do is can you create a sales process skill. Excuse me, called Medic on, um, the Medic principles to qualify, strategize and orchestrate sales strategies while qualifying. I said qualify kind of a bit too much right there. So within here, like this is all I needed to do before it kicked off this extensive process. Right. And as you could see, it created what's called the MD M files, which is, which is what you download and then will eventually want to re upload into the package. And I'll show you how to do that. But as you can see here, it created this and it tells what's included a workflow decision tree, five main opportunities, quick tips, and then it's got your reference documents included. So the interesting thing about this is, um, it basically says the skill triggers when you qualify sales. So it tells you even when it's automatically triggered. Now I haven't extendedly used this a lot where it's identifying like not referencing like, hey, use this specific skill. But I thought it was pretty interesting that it automatically triggers and has all these details. So you want to see what the skill package looks like. It's a zip file, so I would need to download it. So I'll show you what it looks like. So let's say we download this now and then we open it up and then what you're going to see here is just this whole medic file, it's just in my downloads area, right? So if I click into it, it basically has the skill, which is an MD file. That's so that it could. The AI model could understand how it is. And by the way, the amazing thing about this, I'm just starting to test it. This works with Claude code too. So if you're using cloud code for other areas, but then it has assets like a deal review template, a qualification scorecard, and then even references. Okay, I didn't ask it to do all these. And I'm going to click on this because I didn't test it. Um, okay, let me see what it is here. Okay. So it's pulling it up in a different file on my other screen, which I'll jump over to you. Here we go. So this is the type of file and these are, these are actually really good questions. Looking at what I know to be true and from basically running enterprise sales teams and working with my clients, these are like, I mean, this is really good. Okay, so now what we're going to do is we're going to test it. Okay, so first of all, I'll show you how to upload it and use it. So if I was in here, all I would need to do is click Upload skill. And then I would basically just drag and drop it here. Or as you can see in my downloads, I already have it right here. So I would just need to double click that. I already have it installed. So I'm not going to reload it again. As you can see, it's at the top right here. But. And then you just toggle it on if you don't like it. Or you could try it in the chat there or you could delete it. Right, so those are a couple areas that you could look at. However, if we go back and look at what the actual output of it was, you're going to see over here. This is the exact example. So as we walk through here, what you'll see is, okay, we got the enterprise. Okay, here's what I said. Use the enterprise sales process skill, Help me qualify this opportunity. And I just said VP of Customer Success at a 2500 person SAS company. Reach out. After seeing our webinar. They have a 40% churn. The CEO wants it below by 20 or uh, wants it below 25% by Q3. They're evaluating two competitors. Okay, so this is like a normal scenario. All right, so not a lot of detail, but just a little detail right now. Here's what I came up with and this is what surprised me. It's like, uh, all right, here's the executive summary. And then it scores like this is like customer scoring live. And I didn't even ask it to go through this. It just knew based on the skill assessment, right? Talks about the budget authority strength assessment, talks about the critical gap. This is highly impactful data for large deals and large opportunities. So as we continue to go through it, basically I'll scroll to the bottom so we could finish up this video. So when I get this done in under 15 minutes for you, um, but then it's got all the areas and I'll go all the way to the bottom. Okay. Then it gives a total overall score of 11 to 21. Deal Health is just yellow, which is medium. Right. It's got the rationale, the goods and the bads win probability 35 to 45%. I thought that was pretty cool how it's actually doing predictive modeling on the win rate. And then if you look at priority actions over the next 30 days, it basically says, okay, this is what to do. So this is like a deal strategy plan, which I was like, wow, this is pretty freaking good, right? It even says own it, who owns it? Right? And like some of this is pretty detailed. So if you're in sales and you're working on a small deal, then this isn't as applicable for you. And this is by the way, cross transferable to marketing, customer success. Anything that a CEO does, operations, you name it, right? There's going to be insane outputs from this. And then what you're going to see here too is it even identifies like, okay, with the next meeting agenda. This is what you want to do. All right, so I'm going to kind of summarize things because I thought that was a lot that I threw at you in a short period of time. But that's okay because I wanted to give you a lot of value in terms of what we were doing. What you just learned is like three core things, right? One is how to access skills, how to use them, and then how to build and create your own, right? On the fly and then implement them, right? So real easy way to go through that, go from A to Z. And what you're going to see too is like, uh. The other thing I forgot to mention is there's a difference and I want to really kind of like put a bow on this for you. So MCP servers have been all the rage. And I brought this up at the beginning of the video. But here's a good visual that I created that I think you'll like. But basically it talks about the features, right? So most people use custom instructions for context and it's always on and it's static. It does actually take up a lot of tokens and usage from it. Claude Skills is the most efficient one. Basically you just have to do that process, set it up and. And then MCP servers are always running in their heavyweight. I'm thinking this is the best way to operationalize most of it. And then you just use an MCP server if you want to connect or basically transform the content or the document. Like that's something that I'm starting to do with notion in other areas where I'm taking it directly from the LLM so I don't have to cut and paste and just say hey, write this to the other area. So bottom line is, here's my summary. I think there's a massive explosion coming in this space because Skills aren't just foundational for this like copilot mode. But as I mentioned, CLAUDE code is really massively accelerating. I think the same thing's happening with Codex where folks like myself and other people that are ahead of the curve are starting to find edge use cases where these are really, really good agents that you could leverage for different go to market or other non coding related tasks. So Skills is another gateway to that to make it really easy to use for any end user specifically within claude. So that's all I have for you today. If you have any questions, drop them in the chat or the comments. I will definitely resp on to them. I'm really working on trying to make these videos hyper valuable. I'm gonna start including more resources for you and um, hope you appreciated this. If you want more resources, there is a link as well that basically identifies different prompts and use cases and areas that you could do and we're gonna continue to beef that up over time. So you'll see that once you get engaged with that and sign up for that. Otherwise um, really appreciate you joining me and I'll see you all in the next video.
