Ashley June discusses her approach to taking a slower, more intentional summer after grinding hard since January - what she calls her "90s summer." Drawing on nostalgic childhood memories of disconnected, present-focused summers in the 1990s, she explains how she's deliberately clearing her calendar, reducing kids' activities, hiring more help from her team, and creating white space to focus on personal learning, health, and family rather than being chained to her laptop. She's honest that this luxury is earned: at seven years into her online business and 14 years as an entrepreneur, she's paid her dues and scaled sufficiently to afford this shift. She cautions early-stage entrepreneurs that the grind is necessary at the beginning, but once you've built systems and team capacity, reclaiming presence and white space becomes both possible and essential. She also promotes her Sayla 100k self-study program (45% off with code "summer") for women who want to move from zero to six figures at their own pace.

Key takeaways

  • →White space and rest are strategic business investments that become available after years of consistent scaling and should be intentionally taken when earned.
  • →Delegation to a capable team is essential for stepping back from day-to-day operations and moving from holding control to enabling business systems to run independently.
  • →Early-stage entrepreneurs cannot expect slow seasons and must push through the grind phase, but established business owners should recognize when they need a reset to avoid burnout and stay present with family.
  • →Taking an intentional break from over-scheduled activities (sports, camps, commitments) creates the mental and emotional capacity for strategic thinking and personal development projects.
  • →Freedom in business is the end goal of discipline and hustle, and timing your white space season is a personal decision about when you've earned and need that reset.

Questions this episode answers

Why is Ashley June taking a slower summer and what does she mean by a '90s summer?

Ashley is intentionally creating white space and presence this summer by clearing her calendar, reducing kids' activities, and limiting laptop time. She's mimicking 90s summers she remembers - disconnected from constant digital demands, focused on family activities like hiking and fishing, and present rather than constantly checking messages and DMs.

How many years into her business is Ashley June before she felt she could take a slower summer?

Ashley is seven years into her online business journey and 14 years into entrepreneurship overall. She emphasizes that this slower pace is earned through discipline and hustle, and that early-stage entrepreneurs don't have the luxury of significant white space while they're grinding to figure out their business.

What changes is Ashley making to her summer schedule and team structure?

She's hired a team member for more hours, relinquishing control of tasks she's been holding too long, not signing kids up for sports (except possibly tennis), sending only one child to week-long camp, clearing her calendar, and eliminating childcare help to focus on family-centered activities.

What is the Sayla 100k self-study program and what discount is being offered?

Sayla 100k is a self-paced, self-study program designed to help women move from zero to six figures and transition into Evergreen business models. It offers lifetime access and is currently running a 45% discount using the coupon code "summer," ending very soon.

What does Ashley say about taking white space when you're early in your online business?

She states that early-stage entrepreneurs don't have the luxury of significant white space - they must walk through the grind and hustle to figure out their business, but once you've scaled and been consistent for years, white space becomes both possible and important to take.

What our scoring noted

Our reviewer’s read on each dimension, with quotes from the episode.

Insight Density

2 / 20

The episode is almost entirely personal anecdote, nostalgia, and a course promotion. The only business-adjacent claim - that you must grind before you can rest - is a well-worn platitude, not an insight. There is no tactical, strategic, or novel information offered to an operator.

that discipline buys you freedom, right. Eventually.
you grind and you grind and you grind and you can't get out of that if you're at the beginning

Originality

2 / 20

The episode recycles the most generic hustle-then-freedom narrative without any contrarian angle, first-principles reasoning, or novel framing. The '90s summer' metaphor is a thin wrapper around ideas that have circulated in the coaching world for years.

this is not something that you get overnight. This is something that you earn, something that you work for
you have grown, you have scaled, you have been consistent for so many years. Take the white space season.

Guest Caliber

3 / 20

This is a solo host episode. The host's credentials are entirely self-reported in the intro copy ('7 figure business coach'), and the episode's actual content - childhood memories and summer plans - provides no evidence of deep practitioner expertise that would be useful to a B2B operator.

I'm your Host, Ashley June, MBA 7 figure business coach, homeschool mama of three
I am seven years in to my online business journey. I am, um, 14 years in to essentially the entrepreneurship journey.

Specificity & Evidence

2 / 20

The only concrete figures in the episode are Netflix's subscription price and a childhood memory about the 1996 Bulls championship. There are zero business metrics, revenue data, client results, or tactical specifics that would be useful to a practitioner.

Netflix is getting very expensive, by the way. Have you guys noticed, like, our subscription is up to. I think it's like 27 or 29amonth.
I did travel for, like, two weeks, but that was also tiring

Conversational Craft

2 / 20

This is an unstructured solo monologue with no guest, no probing questions, no challenges, and no productive tension. The episode meanders from personal nostalgia to a course discount promo without any substantive interview craft on display.

Hey ladies. This week I want to keep it short and sweet and I want to talk about how this Summer is my 90s summer.
I just want you to think about like, do you remember 90s summers?

Ashley June: Hey ladies. This week I want to keep it short and sweet and I want to talk about how this Summer is my 90s summer. Keeping it simple. I had an episode last week that was talking about typically how I run my summers as an online business. Um, but we are also kind of

Ashley June: shifting gears a little bit and it's

Ashley June: going to be a little bit more laid back, which I'm excited to share. Let's go.

Ashley June: Are you a holy spirit led woman called to build a faith based online business that disrupts the culture, sets people free and leaves a legacy for the generations? If so, welcome to the Set Apart online business podcast.

Ashley June: The podcast for Christian coaches, course creators,

Ashley June: entrepreneurs and ministry leaders who are ready to scale to six and seven figures without compromising their calling. And all while building set apart families and set apart businesses. I'm your Host, Ashley June, MBA 7 figure business coach, homeschool mama of three and founder of Eden the Mastermind and the Salah Collective group coaching program. I help women like you women launch, grow and scale biblically based online businesses that create income, impact and kingdom legacy in less time. I'm talking five to 15 hours a week.

Ashley June: You can build a life of freedom

Ashley June: for your family through building generational wealth and all while having fun. So yes, ladies, I am often surfing in Costa Rica or sneaking away on ski trips in our beautiful Colorado mountains with my little crew. Here we talk about business strategy, funnels, sales work, launching, scaling, motherhood, culture and the holy spirit edge of entrepreneurship. Because building a set apart online business means stepping into the business battlefield with boldness, discernment and the armor of God. Because God has set you apart and you don't have to build your online

Ashley June: business like the world.

Ashley June: So grab your electrolytes or reheat that same cup of coffee for the third time. And let's step into today's episode with big visions and radical boldness. Let's go girls.

Ashley June: Okay, ladies. We have had so much going on as a company over the recent month, right? Honestly, two months. You know, I hosted a great retreat I might actually record the next episode on. Just kind of like what that retreat experience was like this time around. But I kind of wanted to piggyback off of my episode last week and I wanted to talk about how I'm doing summer and my goal right now is to essentially have a 90s summer and how, um, how I want to do that just a little bit differently. Before I get into the nitty gritty of today's episode though, you guys, I want to invite you to come into our Sayla 100k self study program. Uh, for my ladies who did not come into the Salah Collective, the actual group coaching program, we have our SAYLA self study option. This is for the woman who, um, just really wants to work at their own pace, doesn't feel like they need any coaching, community support. Right. And just kind of wants to walk through the modules and get it done. Right. This program is to help you, um, not only get from 0 to 100k, but basically take what you've done and move it into Evergreen after the fact. But it just buys you the time. You have lifetime access to the program. And if you didn't come into the Sailor Collective, this is a great option to get you started, um, if you couldn't swing that quite yet. And so, um, we have a 45% off discount on that program running using the coupon word summer, um, ending very, very soon. Go ahead and get registered if you think it's a fit. But besides that, ladies, I just want you to think about like, do you remember 90s summers? You're riding around. I mean, I was kind of a kid in the 90s, right? So I was born in 1986. So I'm thinking summer 1996. I remember I was on vacation in Chicago, um, with my family because my dad was from Chicago and the Bulls, the Chicago Bulls were playing in the championship. I remember watching that game. Michael Jordan, um, Dennis Rodman, Scottie Pippen. Epic era, you guys. Right? Um, but on that same trip, you know, we went, we went fishing. We used to go to a cabin in Minnesota that my dad, uh, grew up going to. And we actually need to go back. He still goes sometimes. It's just like this childhood place, this childhood lake, um, cabin, resort, whatever we want to call it in Minnesota. Um, but we had probably gotten back from our fishing side of our trip, you know, and yeah, guys, I mean everything was just pretty like disconnected. This was before phones, this was before, um, just the day to day, you know, this wasn't, you know, checking your DMs. Like it was just slow and it was present. Right. Um, and that's something that I feel like we have kind of lost. And so my goal, you guys, this summer for my own family is I am going to be for sure working. Right? Like we're going to be working, working. Um, I have a great team member, um, who is just coming on in more hours. And so I, I feel like I'm in this spot of like, actually like letting go of a lot of things that I have been holding on to for too long. Right. Um, and I am excited to kind of like, not take a back seat, but I'm, I'm excited to relinquish control of some of the things that I have been controlling too much of for a long period of time. Right. Um, and start to work a little bit differently. And as a family, we actually decided, um, knowingly and unknowingly to just have a very chill summer. So I actually, I was planning on signing the kids up for sports and whatnot. To be decided still. I might still put them like in tennis or something because it's like a, an easy sport to go in.

Ashley June: Very optional.

Ashley June: You don't really have games unless you want to do not games, matches, unless, um, you want to sign them up for that. Right? But I didn't sign up for baseball. I didn't sign up for softball. I've coached softball the last like three years. And so that's definitely been a lot. Um, and one of our kids is going to camp for the summer, um, just a week, like an overnight camp for a week. Our other kids are not going this year and my calendar is pretty clear and I'm like, I just feel like I needed that white space. Right. And so I'm excited to go on last minute hikes and I'm not gonna have any childcare this summer. Sometimes I have some childcare help. Um, um, and I've just decided, like, I want this to be a really family focused summer and we are just gonna kind of live life. Right. I want to spend, spend more time just kind of working on my health and just not feeling so rushed day to day. Right. And we'll still be doing things as a business and, and whatnot. But like, my goal is not to be chained to my laptop. And so, you know, I think, you know, you started this business for freedom. And at the same time, at some point, like, you, like, you grind and you grind and you grind and you can't get out of that if you're at the beginning. I would like to say this, like, you cannot get out of that at the beginning. Like, you don't get the, the luxury maybe of a slow 90s summer if you're at the beginning of your business and you're grinding and you' train to figure it out. Right. Um, I am seven years in to my online business journey. I am, um, 14 years in to essentially the entrepreneurship journey. And so I have really earned, um, my right to do this and have paid my dues.

Ashley June: Right.

Ashley June: And so I want to set the Expectation that this is not something that you get overnight. This is something that you earn, something that you work for, something that you, um. I don't know, like, you. You hustle for a bit, right? But that discipline buys you freedom, right. Eventually. And you just kind of have to decide when you want to take it and when you don't. Right. And so, you know, it's. Sometimes we're exhausted and we're overbooked and we're not present. And, um, sometimes you just have to take those moments and say, like, I'm not going to keep operating like this in this next season. Like, I just need a reset. Okay. And so all that to say, I have been hitting it very, very hard since, I would say February, January. It was pretty low key, but I've been hitting it pretty hard since February. Very little break. I did travel for, like, two weeks, but that was also tiring and I had to work very hard to prep for that. Right. Um, and so I'm just excited to kind of take that time. What I also love about taking time like this, you guys, is that I can kind of focus on doing the things I want and, like, learning the things I want to. Like, there's some courses I want to dive into. Um, I bought like, a YouTube program in January that I started, and then when I got busy, it just totally, like, fell off the bandwagon. It became, like, less of a priority. Like, I want to get back to that, um, and just kind of thinking and planning and, and, and whatnot, you know, And I'm like, finally this summer I'm gonna have, honestly, like, a blank canvas, like, pure white space. And we will be filling it with some promotions and some different things. But I also have, like, the team support to really help push that stuff through where I don't have to stress about it as much. Right. Like, it's gonna be, um. It's gonna be a big helpful, you know, finalizing, um, moment of I. I can actually really spend time on the things that I want to spend time with or time on. So anyways, all that to say. I'm just excited to have a 90s summer. And yes, we still, like, have our phones and social media and all the things. Right. Um, I'm not being hardcore and getting rid of cable for the summer. Right. Maybe I should get rid of some of our, you know, subscriptions. Netflix is getting very expensive, by the way. Have you guys noticed, like, our subscription is up to. I think it's like 27 or 29amonth. How did that go from like $10 to $27 a month. I would just like to say that, um, I do remember a 90s summer where we actually did like cancel cable for the whole summer and you just ride your bikes around the neighborhood and go hang with your friends and, you know, um, it was glorious. It was glorious. You go to the pool, you know. Anyway, all that to say, guys, um, I'm excited for the white space this summer. I think that we need it. If, um, you're in the beginning stages of your business, I don't think you have the luxury of as much white space. Right? You have white space maybe before you start, but when you're, when you're in the grind and you're trying to figure it out, you know, like you have to walk through that and you can't just not do that. But like, when you get to the point where you have grown, you have scaled, you have been consistent for so many years. Take the white space season. Take the 90s summer. That's. That's all I have to say. So, um, anyway, ladies, before we close out, just a reminder about the Sala signature self study course. Guys, five phases. It's a business in a box. 45% off with the code summer. And honestly, this is great. Like if you're just wanting to take a slow pace or you are very self motivated and you just want to go from point A, you know, to point Z without any coaching support, but you just want to understand the process and work through that. Um, it's a great introduction into our programs. If you couldn't swing coming into our actual coaching collective, the Sayla Collective, quite yet. Um, and yeah, it's gonna be good. So go check that out. That promotion is gonna be expiring very, very soon. Go to the link in the show notes.
