Fearless Family Business ranks #854 on The B2B Podcast Index with a substance score of 67.5 out of 100, scored across 2 recent episodes. It scores highest on guest caliber and insight density. Katie Kolon is a credible practitioner with relevant experience (14 years as a mediator, background in employment law, certification through recognized programs). However, she is a service provider and facilitator rather than a founder, operator, or business leader who has built/scaled something. Her expertise is in process, not in operating or growing a family business, which limits caliber for a B2B operator audience seeking peer-level insight.
Averaged across 2 recently scored episodes, with cited evidence.
The episode contains moderate insight density with some useful frameworks (dignity elements, four-step playbook, reframing conflict as shared problem) but relies heavily on general principles and conversational throat-clearing. The substance is diluted by biographical narrative, personal anecdotes about growing up in Michigan, and repeated circling around the same concepts without deep operational detail.
“conflict is at the heart of all innovation and creativity”
“changing the focus from against each other to against a common problem that you share”
The core ideas - reframing conflict, finding shared interests, mediation vs. litigation - are well-established frameworks in conflict resolution literature. While the dignity lens and four-step playbook are structured approaches, they are not particularly novel or contrarian. The episode does not challenge conventional wisdom or present counterintuitive findings; it reinforces standard mediation best practices.
“I try to get people to refrain, reframe how they think about, about conflict”
“helping them identify that. And, and then you're identifying common shared interests”
“I've been doing that ever since, for the past. Going on 14 years now”
“I got certified as a mediator and I started working and, um, volunteering with the center for Conflict Resolution”
The episode lacks concrete examples, named companies, specific metrics, or timelines. The one case study mentioned (family business in litigation) is vague and unnamed. The four-step playbook is described in broad terms but not illustrated with real-world implementation details. Succession planning themes are listed generically without case studies or quantified outcomes.
“The last, like, family business sort of mediation I did was they were in litigation for a long time”
“common themes I think are, include like identity. What is, you know, each individual's identity?”
The host asks competent exploratory questions and follows up reasonably well on some threads (Katie's origin story, judicial system dynamics). However, there is insufficient push-back, challenge, or pressure on vague claims. The host does not ask for specific examples, timelines, or evidence of outcomes. Questions often drift into personal history rather than operational substance, and the host accepts general frameworks without demanding proof or complexity.
“Can you talk a little bit about what got you into that, how you got there”
“I'd love to hear more about that. As far as like how to reframe it”

Adam is a thoughtful and curious host and his guests are wide-ranging. The insights he provides are valuable for family businesses, but they also relate so so much more. I think many people, family business or not, would get a lot out of his podcast!
