This episode from the Thriving in Christ show, hosted by Dr. Ioanna Popako, explores why wisdom - not intelligence or knowledge - is the foundation for sound leadership and decision-making. Popako, a physician, psychiatrist, and spiritual care coach, argues that in an age of information overload and artificial intelligence, wisdom becomes increasingly valuable because it integrates knowledge with God's guidance, emotional intelligence, and discernment. The episode is grounded in neuroscience: when leaders feel rushed, emotionally flooded, or cognitively overloaded, their prefrontal cortex goes offline and they revert to reactive, survival-mode decision-making. By slowing down - even for a single breath - leaders can reconnect their entire brain, access God's wisdom, and make decisions aligned with what matters most rather than what feels urgent. Popako draws on Scripture (James 1:5, Ephesians 5:15-16, Proverbs 3:13) and psychological research to show that the most effective leaders aren't those with the highest IQ, but those who pause, center themselves in Christ, and allow deeper wisdom to inform their choices. This resource serves Christian women professionals, servant leaders, and anyone facing leadership challenges, relationship decisions, or crossroads who want to move beyond band-aid solutions into sustainable, grounded renewal.
Research shows that when you feel rushed or emotionally flooded, your frontal lobe goes offline and your body shifts into survival mode, causing you to make decisions based on impulses and reactions rather than reflective thinking. Slowing down - even for a few breaths - brings your frontal lobe back online and allows you to access your full cognitive and spiritual resources for better decisions.
Knowledge is information and facts that can be gathered and studied, while wisdom is deeper and comes from connecting with God. Wisdom asks 'What matters most? What serves the greater good? What aligns with God?' and helps leaders respond from a place beyond fear, urgency, and impulse.
Slowing down, particularly through breathing, calms your fight-or-flight reactions and allows blood flow to return throughout your brain. This helps you reconnect with your thoughts, emotions, body sensations, and most importantly with God, enabling reflective perspective and discernment.
No; research shows the most effective leaders are not necessarily those with the highest IQ, but rather those who can slow down enough to connect with Christ and allow God's wisdom to flow through them.
Being careful means slowing down and not rushing into decisions. Even taking one extra breath helps calm your nervous system and allows you to live wisely rather than unwise, connecting you with your full resources and with God.

Sometimes the greatest challenge isn't that we don't know enough. It's that life moves so fast we no longer create space to recognize God's wisdom when He is already offering it. In a world overflowing with information, opinions, and artificial intelligence, perhaps the question is no longer, "How can I learn more?" but, "How can I become quiet enough to receive true wisdom?" In this Centering Reset, we'll explore how slowing the body, calming the mind, and turning toward Christ opens the door to the kind of wisdom that transforms not only our decisions, but the way we live and lead. Things to discover in this RESET episode: Wisdom begins where hurry ends. A calm mind creates space for discernment. God's wisdom is received, not manufactured. Speaker A: A warm welcome to centering Reset as part of Thriving in Christ show. This is a moment to return to your center in Christ, right in the middle of your life. And today our theme is that of wisdom. Perhaps you're longing right now for more information or something that would inspire you or a new strategy, but perhaps you're longing for something even deeper than that. You're longing for wisdom. Because we live in a world overflowing with information and many people feel increasingly uncertain. And knowledge is possible. We can gather knowledge, but wisdom, especially wisdom from God, is so much more important and we can cut through the chase. And as we connect with God, can connect with that deeper wisdom. And that's what I want for us today. So we'll spend a few minutes with the concept of wisdom. And what does that mean from psychology and science all the way to our Bible. Because as we tap into wisdom, um, it can help us to discern what is right. And it can help us making decisions and showing up more and more in the world, witnessing to Christ, bringing his light into the world. And especially this is important in the world of artificial intelligence, where knowledge is everywhere. We can find information, we can find about research, but not wisdom. Wisdom is one of these beautiful qualities that are truly embodied by human beings as we move through life, as we bring the knowledge in our mind and our emotions and our experiences into the deeper river of God's intelligence and wisdom, as God's thoughts are higher than our thoughts.
Speaker B: And if you're a regular, I want to welcome you back. And if you're new, welcome to Thriving in Christ show for Christian women professionals and servant leaders. And this is for you. If you feel at times stressed, depleted, on a busy treadmill with Sunday night blues, in spite of loving what you do, if you sense blocks in reaching your highest potential for the kingdom, although you're carrying significant responsibility and impact, if you wrestle to fully replenish yourself and access that peace that surpasses all understanding. No matter how many programs you've tried and might worry that the self care and deep renewal, uh, will add more to your mile long to do list or wrestle to stay grounded and expensive in your impact, especially in high stakes situation. If this is you welcome, you're not lacking discipline, you're not lacking faith. More often what's missing is sustainable and skillful renewal. See many of the solutions available today, they act like a band aid placed on top of already burning foundation, which is shaped for us by chronic stress, past events, cultural conditionings, misconceptions. Without taking consideration the needed alignment and wholeness that is necessary to have a sustainable life in Christ. And I know this intimately because I burn out twice. Not because of lack of knowledge, because I'm in the mental health field and not because of lack of faith.
Speaker A: In this show we take a different
Speaker B: approach through the integration of science, psychology, Christian faith and spiritual care. Speaker A: moments so you can expand your capacity
Speaker B: and keep leading and serving in Christ. This is not about doing more. It is about learning how to return skillfully again and again to God within where your strength is renewed like the eagles and your inner life is restored so that your leadership can flow from your soul. Are you ready to grow towards your highest potential from a grounded, renewed foundation with Christ at the helm? Then let's dive in.
Speaker A: Wisdom is beyond knowledge. We can have lots of knowledge in the world and study so much. And of course artificial intelligence brings us so much knowledge, but wisdom is so much deeper. And especially when we can connect with God, we can respond from a deeper place that is beyond fear, beyond urgency, beyond impulse. Wisdom. I ask what matters most? What serves the greater good? What is it that is aligned with God? And the wisdom helps us to slow down. So that's what we're doing right now. We're going to slow down enough to notice and tap into the wisdom. So what I invite you today is to bring a situation that requires wisdom right now. What is it? Maybe a decision, Maybe you need wisdom in a relationship, maybe a leadership challenge, maybe there's an opportunity, a crossroad. And with that, I'll, uh, pause for a few moments until you decide. And then with that we'll go through some psychological insights and also through some Bible verses, and we'll pause afterwards to see what kind of insights you might have about that situation. Interestingly, research and decision science consistently shows that the quality of our decisions decreases when we feel rushed, emotionally flooded, or cognitively overload. What happens is our frontal lobe goes offline. And when emotions are intense and there's a sense of urgency, rightfully so, our body is going to shift all the energy to what's called a low road of emotions. So we are more in the survivor mode and we move into making decisions based on more of our impulses and reactions and conditionings. And when we're able to slow things down, even just for a few moments, and many times the breath helps us tremendously because it slows down our fight or flight reactions, we can actually bring a frontal lobe back online and we can connect with our entire brain, with resources. And uh, that allows us to connect with God, that allows us to be more reflective, have more perspective, able to see the situation through multiple points of view. So we can then bring self awareness and discernment and the deeper wisdom of God. See, the most effective leaders are, uh, not necessarily with the highest iq, but these are the ones who are able to slow things down enough for a few moments, enough to be able to connect with Christ, to be able to connect with God and allow the wisdom of God to flow through. So here are a few scripture verses to encourage us today. So keep them in mind as you hold that situation, that you need some wisdom from God and see what inspiration you might get. James 1:5. This is an IV version. If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and will be given to you. So it could be as simple as that. God, I need wisdom. I don't know what to do. I need wisdom. So I'll just be quiet for a few moments as you kneel in your heart towards God and just say, God, I need wisdom in that situation and see what happens. Don't overthink this, just allow God to trickle in insights. And here's the second Bible verse, Ephesians 5, 15, 16. This is again NIV version. Be careful then how you live. Not as unwise, but as wise. What does that mean? We just pause and we should ask for wisdom from God as we just did. Careful means we're slowing down. Careful means we don't rush. Even if we just take one extra breath to help us calm down. It will help our frontal lobe to calm down and allow for the blood flow to go throughout our brain and give us a sense of connection with our all our thoughts and emotions, body sensations, and most importantly with God. So again, bring that situation again. I'll be quiet for a few more moments and see if you get more inspiration or wisdom.
Speaker B: Foreign.
Speaker A: Our uh, last Bible verse for today. Proverbs 3:13, New King James Version. Happy is the man who finds wisdom and the man who gains understanding. I love this Bible verse. We can tap into a sense of happiness, I would even say joy when we know we're connected with God, where uh, we know that God will help us. So I'm going to pause again and this time again, allow any insights to come. Don't overthink, just stay in silence for a few moments, knowing with certainty that God will bring your solution either through insight right now, or someone else might say something later today or in the next several days or something else will happen in the reality will unfold in such a way that you will know for sure that this is from God. So I'll be quiet for a few moments. And if you're onto something and you want to talk with God a bit more, you can always pause me and right now I am going to send us with blessings and prayers. I'm gonna um, do a short prayer right now for you, lifting you up so that you can continue to bring God's light. And I want to encourage you. You are unique. You are precious. Don't let anyone else tell you anything else, including yourself. When you get into self doubting and just keep being present to God, turning to God, asking for wisdom, trusting God in the unknown. I'm gonna say the prayer and the blessing. Thank you God. Thank you for us for being alive. And I lift up the listener, granting her wisdom today, this week. Help her to see what matters the most. Help her in her decisions to be guided by peace rather than pressure. Give her discernment that you're stronger and stronger within you, with you, for you, as uh, she walks her journey. And help her to walk confidently with you God, and turn towards you for wisdom. You are the creator of the universe, the universal consciousness. You live outside of us and inside of us. You move through us in ways that we do not even begin to imagine. Help the listener guide her and answer all her prayers, known and unknown. And spoken and unspoken, in Jesus name I pray.
