After a hiatus following his father's death from Parkinson's and dementia, host Jeff Hyatt opens Season 7 by sharing how a health scare - discovering he was on the same medical trajectory as his father at 62 - led him to functional medicine and a complete reassessment of his approach to strategy. Rather than pivoting to health content, Hyatt frames this as an evolution toward human-centered strategy, rooted in design thinking principles. He discovered that aligning biochemistry through functional medicine, combined with neuro-emotional awareness, creates a virtuous cycle of health and performance. The podcast will now explore strategy through three foundational principles drawn from his father's memorial eulogy: generosity, standing on the shoulders of others, and leaving a legacy. These principles, Hyatt argues, are essential for building intentional lives and businesses. The next three episodes will dive deep into each theme, blending personal narrative with strategic insight for an audience seeking more meaningful, values-driven approaches to growth.
His father's death from Parkinson's and dementia, combined with discovering he was on the same health trajectory as his father at age 62, motivated Hyatt to pursue functional medicine and adopt a more human-centered approach to strategy based on design thinking principles.
No - the podcast remains focused on business strategy, but will now explore strategy through a human-centered lens, examining how personal health, values, and legacy inform strategic decision-making.
Generosity, standing on the shoulders of others, and leaving a legacy - principles Hyatt identified from reflecting on his father's life and believes are essential for building intentional lives and businesses.
Rather than accepting his health trajectory passively, he applied design thinking methodology to find a better way, leading him to a functional medicine doctor who spent a year realigning his biochemical and neuro-emotional systems.
Our reviewer’s read on each dimension, with quotes from the episode.
This is a season teaser that reads more like a personal reflection and life update than substantive business strategy content. Beyond a generic mention of 'design thinking' and the three foundational principles (generosity, standing on shoulders of others, legacy), there are no novel, non-obvious business insights or frameworks that would educate a B2B operator. The content is primarily autobiographical.
in the spirit of design thinking, there's got to be a better way
the three things that stuck out to me were generosity, this idea of standing on the shoulders of others, and leaving a legacy
The themes of generosity, legacy, and standing on the shoulders of giants are well-worn philosophical concepts, not original strategic thinking. The personal health narrative, while genuine, does not introduce fresh frameworks or counterintuitive approaches to business strategy. This reads as introspection rather than novel insight.
generosity, this idea of standing on the shoulders of others, and leaving a legacy
we're not turning into a health-focused podcast. It's still the Big Strategy Podcast
This is a solo host teaser with no guest appearance. There is no guest to evaluate, making this dimension not applicable to the content provided.
I'm your host and fellow strategist, Jeff Hyatt
The episode lacks concrete data, named examples, metrics, or specific business cases. The only specifics mentioned are personal (father's medication list, age 62, ChatGPT interaction) rather than business-relevant examples. No companies, dollar figures, or measurable outcomes in a strategic context are provided.
I found a printout of the medicines that he was taking when he was 62 years old
I scanned the list and put it into ChatGPT and gave it some of my health markers
This is a monologue, not a conversation, so there are no host questions, follow-ups, or pushback. The structure is reflective but not dialogical. The host presents his framework and experience without testing ideas against another voice or engaging in substantive debate.

Season 7 of The BIG Strategy Podcast begins with a different kind of conversation. After a personal loss and a period of reflection, this season shifts inward exploring strategy not just as a business discipline, but as something deeply human. In this teaser, I share the story behind that shift and introduce the three themes that will shape the opening episodes: generosity, standing on the shoulders of others, and leaving a legacy. This season is more personal. More intentional. And more focused on the principles that guide how we build, lead, and live. If you’re thinking about the kind of impact you want to create in your work and beyond, this season is for you. Subscribe now and join me for the journey.

Hello, welcome to the Big Strategy Podcast. I'm your host and fellow strategist, Jeff Hyatt. This is your go-to spot for real talk with the masterminds of business strategy. It's about sharing stories, insights, and those little nuggets of wisdom to help you unlock big growth.
Let's turn the key and spring into action. Well, it's season seven of the Big Strategy podcast where we have 75 episodes booked and we're looking to get to 100. But that push is going to be led by me on this side of the camera. So welcome to the journey.
It's been a few months since I had the chance to chat with you. And it was under some unfortunate circumstances. My father passed away over the holidays after a long bout with Parkinson's and dementia. And it was about a year ago, I guess, that I really started the mourning process.
I found a printout of the medicines that he was taking when he was 62 years old. And I scanned the list and put it into ChatGPT and gave it some of my health markers and basically said, hey, what's the prognosis? And it said, you're on his path. Summarizing, but it scared the living daylights out of me.
And I talked to my primary care physician and they said, well, you know, you write an exercise and I know that that hadn't been doing it. So in the spirit of design thinking, there's got to be a better way. And so I went and found a functional medicine doctor who over the last year we've spent sort of realigning the biochemical side of my body and my body's actually begun the process of healing and acting as a normal body should, even though a Western diet tries to challenge that.
And then the other side of that is the neuro-emotional side. So when your body sends you signals to your brain, then does your brain act in a way that creates this virtuous cycle, if you will. And I'm in that process. It's an incredible process.
And if you're facing any challenges yourself, I encourage you to look into it, or I'm happy to chat and share my experience in greater depth. So what does that mean for the podcast? Well, we're not turning into a health-focused podcast. It's still the Big Strategy Podcast.
But we're going to look at strategy, at least through the next few episodes, through a more human-centered lens, which I'm known to do as a design thinker. That being said, when I was writing the eulogy for my dad's memorial service, caused me to reflect on a lot of things, some things I was upset with him about, that he didn't take better care of his health, but on the other side, a lot of things that were really foundational. And the three things that stuck out to me were generosity, this idea of standing on the shoulders of others, and leaving a legacy.
I thought about those three things and say those are really like foundational principles to build a life on and to actually, as you go into the world, go in with that level of intentionality. And that's what we're going to talk about over the next three episodes. Generosity, standing on the shoulders of others, and leaving a legacy. I hope you'll join us for the journey.
It's going to be personal. It's going to be intimate. And I'm looking forward to hearing your stories as well. Please subscribe so that you can follow along and I'll see you on the next episode.
