Episode notes

GUEST: Hitendra Wadhwa is a professor at Columbia Business School, founder of the Mentora Institute, and author of Inner Mastery, Outer Impact. His work explores how leaders create meaningful change by first working on their inner world. In this conversation, we explore a different way to think about leadership. Instead of focusing on traits or competencies, Hitendra introduces the idea of activating states and how leadership is often shaped in small, high-stakes human moments. We discuss why leadership is less about grand strategies and more about what happens in micro interactions such as a feedback conversation, a moment of conflict or a shift in perspective. Hitendra shares his research on “breakthrough moments” and the patterns behind them, drawing from examples like Gorbachev’s reframing with Thatcher and Mandela’s negotiation with a military general. We also dive into his framework of five core energies including Love, Purpose, Wisdom, Self-realization and Growth, and how these translate into simple actions that can be applied in real time. The conversation challenges the idea of fixed personality and suggests that we are a set of capacities we can intentionally activate.
