Last week there were devastating earthquakes in many places, but mainly in parts of Venezuela. And smartphones helped people to survive. It is the same technology that smartphones use to detect when an elderly or a frail relative help has a fall. There's a little accelerometer which identifies that somebody has fallen over and then can send out an alert if you've got it switched on and the right apps installed. Now that same technology can detect when multiple hundreds and thousands of phones feel the earth, uh, moving. And in Android devices, uh, the Android device ecosystem detects when multiple people feel the first early tremors that are often associated with a coming earthquake. Now you only get a few seconds warning between the first micro movements that are detectable by a smartphone and then a full earthquake coming. But those phones can take all of that data within, uh, milliseconds, identify where the epicenter of the earthquake is, and send out an alert across the entire Android network. And have a look at this visualization from Science explained to show that's exactly what happened in Venezuela with hundreds of thousands of people receiving an alert that gave them a, uh, few seconds, uh, it was 3, 4 at most, about 15 seconds warning. But in some cases that was enough, uh, for people to act, to act quickly to get out of a building, to get out of harm's way and into a safer location. Lives were saved because we are able to use the technology that we've got to give us real world benefits. I personally think that's what's missing in many of the applications and the software. With much of the technology advances that we've got at the moment, it feels like technology advance for the sake of advance. Uh, what we really need is for people to give us real life benefit that really makes a difference.
