Customer Centric Retailing Podcast ranks #4274 on The B2B Podcast Index with a substance score of 54.0 out of 100, scored across 1 recent episode. It scores highest on guest caliber and specificity & evidence. Joseph Sharplin is a genuine practitioner at a real brand with global operations, which is meaningful, but he only entered e-commerce two years ago via an accidental internal move and openly admits logistics and broader commercial strategy are outside his expertise - limiting the depth he can offer.
Averaged across 1 recently scored episode, with cited evidence.
There are a handful of useful practitioner observations - BigCommerce B2B-first vs Shopify D2C-first, using customer groups to serve both segments with minimal UX divergence - but large stretches are filler, host monologue, and generic AI commentary. The ratio of novel claims to runtime is poor.
“we control DSC and B2B via customer groups out of BigCommerce. So when you log into our site as a B2B customer the UX ultimately stays very similar. Um, but we inject a couple of um, B2B specific tools um, to help the B2B customer kind of navigate the site and add things to cart quickly”
“it kind of sounds funny, you know, even, even as I say it myself. But um, I put my hand up and just jumped into it and kind of cut my teeth on it”
The BigCommerce-vs-Shopify B2B-first framing is mildly useful, and the 'premium blank apparel, no race to the bottom' positioning is at least grounded. But the AI discussion retreads common 2024 SEO anxiety with no novel synthesis, and the host's 'think of yourself as an AI training company' framing is underdeveloped.
“I'd say in my experience, you know some, someone like Shop fire is probably DTC first and now they're working on the B2B side of it”
“we're not interested in races to the bottom in terms of pricing”
Joseph Sharplin is a genuine practitioner at a real brand with global operations, which is meaningful, but he only entered e-commerce two years ago via an accidental internal move and openly admits logistics and broader commercial strategy are outside his expertise - limiting the depth he can offer.
“about two years ago um, an opportunity came up where our E commerce manager went on maternity leave and there was basically um, you know, work needing done in the space”
“it's not entirely my area of expertise, Larry”
The episode delivers some concrete structural detail - five websites, six distribution centers across NZ/AU/US/UK/EU, BigCommerce as platform, NZ Post for local fulfilment, Sony Music as a named urgent-order use case - but there are zero metrics, conversion figures, revenue data, or order volumes to anchor any of it.
“we have one in New Zealand, one in Australia, two in the US UK and more recently the European distribution Center”
“a use case of that would be, let's say you have uh, Sony Music who require X amount of T shirts for some band merch they're doing for an artist and they need that the next day”
The host routinely hijacks the conversation with lengthy personal anecdotes (Airbnb/ChatGPT story, BigCommerce client work) and rarely follows up on substantive threads; questions are vague ('what's your secret sauce?', 'how does the logistics math work out?') and no claim goes challenged or probed for evidence.
“So, uh, where I see, in my personal experience, I've been using AI a lot. I travel. So for example, if I'm looking for Airbnb, uh, now before, back in the day I was go Google the location”
“So tell us about uh, how, how your, this whole logistics math works out”
