Episode notes

Team management strategies can only go so far when your team no longer feels confident enough to step up. If people who once made decisions, solved problems, and brought you ideas are suddenly hesitating, it’s natural to wonder what changed. You might even start questioning whether they care as much as they used to. But there may be something else going on. Sometimes what looks like a lack of ownership is actually caution. As a business grows, priorities shift, roles evolve, and decisions get more complex. Your team can feel that uncertainty even when you haven’t talked about it openly. And without enough context, capable people may start checking in more, taking fewer risks, and sending decisions back to you. That’s why some of the most effective team management strategies start with curiosity rather than accountability. Before assuming you have employee performance issues, ask what has changed around the person. Strong leadership skills include noticing when expectations, authority, or the definition of ownership itself may need to be clarified. Because telling someone to “take more ownership” isn’t enough.
