The Daily Bolster ranks #530 on The B2B Podcast Index with a substance score of 76.0 out of 100, scored across 1 recent episode. It scores highest on guest caliber and originality. Lencioni is a genuine practitioner with 30 years of executive team consulting, verifiable market penetration (five dysfunctions at ~1,000 copies/week, ~1M Working Genius assessments), and honest self-awareness about his own limitations as a CEO. He sits more in the author-consultant category than scale operator, which limits the score.
Averaged across 1 recently scored episode, with cited evidence.
The Working Genius section delivers genuinely useful taxonomy (disruptive vs. responsive geniuses, the lawyer-turned-tech-acquisition story) and the nonprofit/for-profit crossover insight has real utility. However, a substantial portion of the episode is biographical filler, Steve Jobs name-dropping, and book promotion chat that pads the runtime without adding operator value.
“Three of the geniuses, which are W, D and E across the top are what we call responsive geniuses. Those are, they wait for other people to initiate things. The three at the bottom, which are I, G and T, invention, galvanizing, tenacity, are called disruptive geniuses.”
“treat your employees in a for profit as they were, as if they were volunteers, where you had to appeal to their sense of wanting to do a good job as though they weren't even getting paid”
The disruptive-vs-responsive genius reframe is a genuinely counterintuitive taxonomy - arguing disruption is as much about galvanizing and tenacity as invention - and the nonprofit/for-profit accountability inversion is a clean original insight. Most of the rest (humility as differentiator, surround yourself with complementary people) is standard leadership-book fare.
“people will think it's all about wonder and invention. It's just as much about discernment, galvanizing and tenacity”
“if you're a for profit, have the same level of idealism that a nonprofit has”
Lencioni is a genuine practitioner with 30 years of executive team consulting, verifiable market penetration (five dysfunctions at ~1,000 copies/week, ~1M Working Genius assessments), and honest self-awareness about his own limitations as a CEO. He sits more in the author-consultant category than scale operator, which limits the score.
“the Five Dysfunctions of a Team. Which still crazily sells like A thousand copies a week”
“About a million people have taken it now it's growing like crazy”
The episode has pockets of real specificity - named executives (Gary Kelly, Bob Jordan), the 15-employee/50-consultant firm structure, the lawyer reorg story, and concrete assessment adoption numbers - but many illustrative examples are deliberately anonymised ('a multibillion dollar technology company') and a lot of the advice stays conceptual.
“he was their lawyer. Wow. And they were like, oh, so we do have an inventor in amongst us, but he's the lawyer. And so they actually reorged it that day”
“We have 15 employees... we do have 50 consultants around the world”
Matt earns credit for sharing his own team's Working Genius results to generate a concrete back-and-forth, for asking Lencioni directly about his personal CEO weaknesses, and for the nonprofit-vs-corporate question that produced a fresh answer. But there's substantial softball admiration (Steve Jobs tangent, book ranking chat) and several moments where an interesting claim ('humility is the key differentiator') goes completely unchallenged.
“I feel like I have elements of all six in me. The trick for me is sort of knowing when and how to exercise each one of them”
“Is there some piece of being the CEO that um, you struggle to get right?”
