This first 2024 episode of the Thrifty Marketer Podcast consolidates predictions from eight recognized marketing authorities on what marketers should prioritize in the year ahead. Mark Schaefer advocates for courage in experimenting with emerging technologies like AI, Web3, and the metaverse rather than mastering everything. Jim Stern frames generative AI as a strategic co-creation partner for brainstorming and advice, not just content generation. Julia McCoy warns that AI adoption will determine competitive advantage - those using it will advance 10x faster, similar to how tractors and automobiles transformed previous industries. Brian Kramer emphasizes authenticity and human-to-human connection through simplicity, empathy, and imperfection, especially as AI proliferates. Donna Moritz advocates for democratizing visual content creation through Canva, brand kits, templates, and design systems so non-designers can contribute. Troy Sandage introduces "conscious growth pathways," positioning marketing at the intersection of experience, entertainment, education, and empowerment to reflect community values. Christophe Trappa stresses testing multiple channels - YouTube Shorts, video blogs, live streams, and long-form blogging - without premature abandonment. Dennis Yu focuses on Google's AI-driven search transformation (SGE), emphasizing the importance of knowledge panels, local search optimization, and being "Googleable" as traditional 10 blue links disappear.

Questions this episode answers

What should marketers do with generative AI in 2024?

Use it as a trusted advisor for co-creating strategy, brainstorming, and validating ideas rather than as a tool to generate copy-paste content or facts.

How will AI adoption affect competitive advantage in 2024?

Those using AI will advance 10 times faster than competitors, similar to how tractors and cars transformed farming and transportation - AI is a tool to get in the driver's seat of faster production.

What are the three pillars of human-to-human marketing according to Brian Kramer?

Simplicity, empathy, and imperfection - these principles remain essential for standing out as technology advances.

How can non-designers create consistent visual content at scale?

Set up brand kits with logos, fonts, and colors in tools like Canva, create locked templates for team use, establish brand guidelines, and use design approval systems to democratize content creation.

How is Google's search changing with AI and what should marketers do?

Google's Search Generative Experience (SGE) will return single consolidated answers like ChatGPT instead of 10 blue links; marketers must optimize for knowledge panels, local search, proper SEO, and real content to remain visible.

What our scoring noted

Our reviewer’s read on each dimension, with quotes from the episode.

Insight Density

4 / 20

The episode is almost entirely composed of generic AI-hype talking points and platitudes, with the partial exceptions of Dennis Yu's SGE/knowledge-graph point and Donna Moritz's Canva workflow steps. The vast majority of runtime is spent on recycled, surface-level encouragement with no mechanism, no data, and no operational depth.

my encouragement would be to be unafraid and to remember that to succeed today, you don't have to be an expert in everything
The biggest advice that I can give is to prioritize authenticity into your marketing efforts by creating genuine connections with your audience

Originality

3 / 20

Every major take - AI will transform everything, be authentic, experiment with new platforms - has been repeated verbatim in thousands of marketing posts and panels. The few structural frameworks offered (Troy Sandage's 4-E model, Brian Kramer's H2H pillars) are either vague buzzword constructions or years-old branded concepts being recycled here.

it's just like when the tractor came out, it didn't replace the farmer. The farmer simply got in the driver's seat
Blogging my friends is not dead

Guest Caliber

7 / 20

The lineup mixes a few legitimate practitioners with real track records (Dennis Yu as a working agency CEO, Jim Stern who founded the Marketing Analytics Summit) against several career keynote speakers and self-described thought leaders whose bios are heavier on titles like 'top 14 content marketer' than on operational accomplishments at scale.

Called the Zen Master to digital marketers by Forbes, Brian Kramer is a renowned business strategist, global keynote speaker
today he's a global top 14 content marketer, top 40 B2B marketer, top 100 SEAX thought leader and top 24 digital marketer

Specificity & Evidence

3 / 20

Almost no concrete data, dollar figures, timelines, or named case studies appear anywhere in the episode. The most specific content is Dennis Yu naming 'search generative experience (SGE)' and Donna Moritz listing five Canva setup steps, but even these stop well short of evidence or measurable outcomes.

The biggest change is the AI that comes from search generative experiences, also known as SGE
set up your brand kit with logos, fonts, color palettes, approved images or photography icons, and more

Conversational Craft

2 / 20

This is a clip-compilation format with no actual interviewing - the host reads bios and stitches together pre-recorded monologues, making follow-up questions, pushback, or any probing dialogue structurally impossible. The sign-off confirms the passive nature of the whole episode.

Well, those were some amazing insights on how marketing will shape up in 2024 by some of the leading marketers today. See you with next episode soon.

Speaker B: Hello there. Welcome back to the Thrifty Marketer Podcast. It's been a while since I released an episode, so here I am with the first episode of 2024. This is an exciting episode where some of the special thought leaders in marketing sharing their thoughts on what to expect in Marketing in 2024. The experts featured include Mark Schaefer, Troy Sandage, Julia McCoy, Donna Moritz, Brian Kramer, Dennis Yu, Jim Stern, and Christophe Trappa. Let's hear it from the experts in their own words and be ready for what lies ahead. The first expert on this episode is Mark Schaefer. Mark Shaffer is a globally recognized keynote speaker, educator, business consultant and author. His blog is hailed as one of the top marketing blogs in the world. Mark has worked in global sales, PR and marketing positions for more than 30 years and provides consulting services as executive Director of Shaffer Marketing Solutions.

Speaker C: We're in a time that can be very overwhelming. There's so much coming at us right now. And, uh, my encouragement would be to be unafraid and to remember that to succeed today, you don't have to be an expert in everything. You don't have to have all the right answers, but you do have to have all the right questions. And to do that, you need to know enough about things to know what questions to ask. And that means having some courage and getting involved in things that are new, like web3 and AI and the metaverse experiment dabble. I think that's a real key to success as we go forward in the world of marketing.

Speaker B: Next, we have Jim Stern. Jim Stern focuses on creating and strengthening customer relationships through digital communications. He sold business computers to companies that had never owned one. In the 1980s, consulted and keynoted about online marketing in the 1990s, founded Marketing Analytics Summit and Digital Analytics Association. In the 2000s, keynoted worldwide and wrote his 12th book on online marketing, Artificial Intelligence for Marking Practical applications in the 2000 and tens. Let's hear it from Jim My name

Speaker D: is Jim Stern and my very best marketing advice for 2024 is to invest your time in understanding generative AI as best you can. Not so that it can create content for you, but so that it can help you co create strategy. Don't ask it for facts, don't ask it for output that you can copy and paste. Ask it its opinion, ask it for advice, ask it to hear your ideas and comment and add. Treat it as a trusted advisor who doesn't quite get all the context all the time but can really help with brainstorming. Best advice ever.

Speaker B: Next Expert is Julia McCoy Julia McCoy is an 8 times best selling author and a leading strategist around creating exceptional content and presence that lasts online. As the President at Content at Scale, she leads big initiatives for one of the fastest growing AI content writing tools for SEO marketers on the planet. Let's hear it from Julia hey, I'm

Speaker E: Julia McCoy, the president of Content at Scale and partner at both Content at Scale and Content Hacker. My marketing advice for 2024 you could call it a predict a warning, call it what you'd like. But I would advise those in marketing, content creation, running a business, owning a business, any part of that that involves marketing to pay attention to AI. Those that are using AI will get ahead 10 times faster. And those that are not using AI, not adapting, are going to um, completely get left by the wayside. That is how much AI is going to affect our work as we know it. It's going to shift everything. And it's just like when the tractor came out, it didn't replace the farmer. The farmer simply got in the driver's seat. When the car came out, we got in the seat of the driver of the car. We left the horse behind. AI is a way to advance so much faster than we've ever thought possible. Speed to production with our marketing is now possible. All the roadblocks are gone. So it's time to adapt as fast as we can find the right AI tool and uh, get on board.

Speaker B: Next expert Sharing his insights is Brian Kramer. Called the Zen Master to digital marketers by Forbes, Brian Kramer is a renowned business strategist, global keynote speaker, executive trainer and coach, two time best selling author and Forbes contributor. He's CEO of H2HO Companies, an executive coaching company, and co owner of Pure Matter, a Silicon Valley marketing agency founded in 2001.

Speaker F: Hi, this is Brian Kramer and I would love to give some market advice. Thank you for inviting me, uh, Vivek for advice on 2024. Marketing the biggest advice that I can give is to prioritize authenticity into your marketing efforts by creating genuine connections with your audience. Almost would say human to human is still a thing. It's even more important now than ever. And the three pillars of human to human still apply, which is simplicity, empathy, and imperfection. Embrace all three and you will shine through. Especially with the new technologies, emerging fields in artificial intelligence and everything coming, authenticity is going to be key if you want to stand out in 2024. Thank you so much.

Speaker B: Next we have Donna Moritz. She is an Aussie creative and visual content strategist and the founder of the award winning blog Socially Sorted. Donna helps non designers create amazing visual content to get more engagement, traffic and sales in their business using tools like Canva. Let's hear it from Donna.

Speaker G: Hey, it's Donna Maritz from Socially Sorted Visual Content Strategist and Canva Verified Expert. My marketing advice for 2024 is for teams to set systems in place to support everyone in developing visual literacy skills or design literacy. And this means that it doesn't fall on the designer or the brand manager to create visual content. And that's great news because let's face it, creating video content, visuals, communicating visually is required everywhere right now. So here are some ways to do this using Canva as an example. Firstly, set an expectation that everyone can do this, even non designers. Secondly, set up your brand kit with logos, fonts, color palettes, approved images or photography icons, and more. Third. Thirdly, have your designer create team templates that can be used by all team members. By locking down essential design elements, it keeps the designer and the non designers happy. And trust me, they don't want to have to design things from scratch. Fourthly, establish clear brand guidelines and even set up things like your brand voice that can be pulled in by magic. Write to assist in creating AI generated content that's on brand and lastly, communicate as a team to create visuals by commenting on designs, implementing design approvals, and even using tools like Canva's whiteboard to plan projects in a visual way. Even if you have a small team, leveraging these tools and systems will boost productivity and lead to visual content success in 2024.

Speaker B: Next, we have Troy Sandich. Troy is an award winning growth strategist who transforms emerging uh, businesses into sustainable and scalable enterprises by creating strategies, systems and solutions. Known as the Strategy Hacker and recognized as a top 100 marketing leader, Troy is the author of Strategize up, host of the Webby nominated top 100 marketing podcast. I digress. An Internationally acclaimed speaker, startup advisor and angel investor.

Speaker C: Marketing is going to encompass what I like to call conscious growth pathways which is doing marketing in a more equitable way. Way is meeting brands of the intersection of experience, entertainment, education and empowerment through your marketing to actually drive profitable outcomes, desirable communities to engage and make a greater impact in a more inclusive and equitable way. What we are discovering, what we will see in 2024 and beyond is that marketing will evolve less about what the internal brand believes and instead represents and reflect what the community wants and demands at a higher frequency with more understanding and intentionalism to drive community by reflect by reflecting their language as well as affirming uh, their beliefs, their insights and what they want to experience. That's why experience at entertainment education empowerment will be absolutely critical in marketing moving forward at a higher frequency that's more inclusive.

Speaker B: Next we have Christoph Trapp. Kristof has worked in various verticals and with a mix of businesses including startups and established companies. And his experience spans the full spectrum of digital strategy and implementation. Today he's a global top 14 content marketer, top 40 B2B marketer, top 100 SEAX thought leader and top 24 digital marketer. His blog has been listed as a valuable resource in the marketing industry.

Speaker D: Hello, this is Christophe Trapp, Director of content strategy at GrowGetter, your growth marketing partner. My biggest tip, number one tip for marketing strategy in 2024 really comes down to trying all the different things and seeing what works. But also don't just give up too quickly. See if you can reach people through YouTube shorts, maybe a video blog, maybe a, ah, live stream podcast. Blogging my friends is not dead. The long term strategies will be the ones that will help you be successful. So let's make 2024 a uh, great year and connect with the right audience and the right customers.

Speaker B: And our final expert is Dennis Yu. Denis is the CEO of BlitzMetrics, a digital marketing company that partners with schools to train young adults. We offer courses, implementation and consulting. He helps digital agencies grow serving doctors and real estate agents. As a fractional T2.

Speaker H: My big advice for 2024 is to make sure are you Googleable? Google's changing so much with AI we uh, have to be able to show up in knowledge panels and the knowledge graph. If you're a local search business, you've got to run local search ads. You have to do SEO with proper location service pages. Your personal brand has to show up. There's so many different ways to show up now in Google. The biggest change is the AI that comes from search generative experiences, also known as SGE. Just like with the OpenAI, uh, ChatGPT tool that returns a single answer, Google will be returning a single answer. So instead of people coming to your website, they're going to get the consolidated answer across many sites. This is going to impact many people who do SEO because they're doing it the old way with the 10 blue links. When you build up your knowledge graph items to get the knowledge panel to do SEO the right way with real content and real links, that's how you're going to win in 2024 and be able to answer the question, are you Googleable?

Speaker B: Well, those were some amazing insights on how marketing will shape up in 2024 by some of the leading marketers today. See you with next episode soon.
