Sports Business Radio Podcast ranks #2544 on The B2B Podcast Index with a substance score of 64.0 out of 100, scored across 1 recent episode. It scores highest on guest caliber and specificity & evidence. Stone is a legitimate senior operator - first CEO in Spirit history, prior senior roles at the Heat and Warriors under hall-of-fame executive Rick Welts, and now overseeing a multi-club international portfolio under a billionaire owner. She speaks from genuine institutional experience, though the interview doesn't fully unlock her depth, and she isn't operating at the very apex of global sports business.
Averaged across 1 recently scored episode, with cited evidence.
The Kim Stone interview contains a handful of genuinely useful operational details - the High Impact Player (HIP) rule mechanics, the Kaniska portfolio governance model, the fan segmentation approach - but the episode is heavily diluted: roughly 40+ minutes of the runtime is two hosts chatting about World Cup, NBA Draft, Portland Blazers, gambling, and Wimbledon, producing little B2B learning. Even within the interview, generic leadership platitudes appear frequently alongside the useful material.
“that high impact player rule allows teams right now to exceed the salary cap by a million dollars to pay players who meet certain marketing criteria and performance criteria”
“we do a fan segmentation study. We know our five types of fans and what the. We could do five different types of, um, media that would appeal, be very different pieces of media and would appeal to each of those five segments”
The most original material is specific to NWSL mechanics - the HIP rule creation story, the contrast between European standalone women's clubs versus men's team-owned clubs, and the schedule-flip vetting process. However, the bulk of the episode recycles familiar sports-media takes (protect your star asset, teams producing their own content, social media replacing SportsCenter) that circulate widely.
“in Europe, a lot of the women's soccer teams are owned by men's teams. So Michelle bought this team from the. The men's team. And so it is a standalone, women, independent organization which is very unique in Europe”
“playing in the winter, about half of the NWSL teams play in cold or, you know, ultra cold markets. And so those facilities and those, whether it's the practice facility or the stadium, you know, they're not winterized yet”
“Rick Welts was the president of the Golden State warriors and those two gentlemen. Rick is in the hall of Fame, the Basketball hall of Fame, because of his acumen as a business executive”
“Michelle is the smartest owner I have ever worked for. And that is no shade on anybody else. It's just that Michelle comes from a consulting background. She then applied that and became a self made woman billionaire”
Stone provides a handful of concrete details - the $1M HIP salary cap exception, twice-yearly in-person Kaniska summits plus monthly business reviews, OL having eight or nine UEFA championships - but the interview is largely absent of revenue figures, attendance breakdowns, sponsorship values, or growth metrics that would make the Spirit's business truly legible to a B2B operator.
“that high impact player rule allows teams right now to exceed the salary cap by a million dollars”
“We physically get together in person probably two times a year. And then monthly we do business reviews together”
The host has genuine domain knowledge - he connects the Sophia Wilson deal in Portland to Trinity's HIP contract and references prior guests like Lindsay Heaps - but every question is framing-and-validate rather than probe-and-challenge. He feeds Stone easy setups ('Can you explain why that was so important?'), never pushes on vague claims, and delivers lengthy monologues before each question, consuming airtime that could have generated deeper answers.
“I want to go back to Trinity Rodman for a minute because she is so marketable, she's such an outstanding player. But Michelle Kang and your organization really stepped up and has made her one of the highest paid players in women's sports”
“Last question for you. Um, we've talked about a lot of the things on your plate already as you look ahead for the rest of the season. Are there some initiatives or things on your to do list that you're like, these are really things that I would like to try”
