Holly Jackson challenges the conventional wisdom that constant grinding drives success, presenting instead a business case for what she calls "recovery ROI." Drawing on burnout statistics, neuroscience around chronic cortisol levels, and cognitive function research, Jackson argues that strategic rest directly improves work quality, problem-solving capability, and innovation - not despite reducing hours, but because of it. She introduces the recovery audit framework, asking leaders to evaluate their calendar ratios of go-time versus rest, and proposes that modern brands using deliberate rest maintain faster pivot speeds and beat overextended competitors. The episode centers on engineering a "stillness advantage" through intentional calendar protection, eliminating low-value busy work, and shifting organizational KPIs and standard operating procedures to reflect the value of rest. Jackson positions this as the "rest revolution" - a cultural mandate for companies competing in environments marked by AI adoption, economic uncertainty, and talent retention challenges. She argues that human energy management, psychological safety, and authentic relationships become competitive differentiators for resilient companies through 2027 and beyond.
Recovery ROI positions intentional rest as a strategic investment that improves cognitive function, decision-making quality, and innovation rather than a loss of productivity; leaders who prioritize rest work fewer hours but produce higher-quality output and maintain competitive advantage through better problem-solving and flow state.
A recovery audit evaluates the ratio of go-time versus rest time (both passive and active recovery) on your calendar and your team's calendars, then identifies and eliminates low-value busy work to create protected space for stillness, creativity, and restoration.
Rest enables neural repair, psychological clarity, and access to intuitive problem-solving that forced grinding prevents; deliberate stillness and flow state are where creative breakthroughs and innovative solutions actually originate, which is why the most successful modern brands use rest to maintain faster pivot speeds.
Organizations need to shift KPIs, team meeting standards, and standard operating procedures to reflect the value of stillness and human energy management rather than signaling busyness; this cultural shift improves decision-making clarity, organizational transparency, investor confidence, and long-term talent retention.
As AI adoption and economic uncertainty accelerate, the most resilient companies will be those prioritizing human energy management and sustainable performance over burnout; this creates better retention, innovation quality, authentic relationships, and genuine competitive differentiation.

The episode runs ~11 minutes and is packed almost exclusively with repackaged wellness truisms dressed in business vocabulary ("cognitive ROI," "recovery audit"). There are no novel non-obvious claims a smart operator wouldn't already know; the rare data point is unverifiable and vague.

Holly Jackson: The hustle harder culture isn't just exhausting you, it's devaluing your brand. Today, I want to talk to you about what I want to call recovery ROI. Why your intentional rest is your brand's greatest competitive competitive advantage. And here's why.
First of all, let's talk about the biological cost of the 24/7 grind. And I know for you business owners and entrepreneurs, you're thinking, Holly, it's always top of mind. I get that. I do.
I'm in this with you. I feel that roller coaster. I feel the need and the urgency around the hustle, but I'm here to tell you that it has a huge cost on you. creates ⁓ burnout rates.
If we look back at 2026 executive data burnout rates, they're astronomically higher than ever. You couple that with the chronic cortisol levels that we see with stress, with the constant grind, with the constant pressure we put on ourselves. It's not good for our hearts. It's not good for our brains.
And it creates an incredible amount of inflammation in our body. And you wonder why people hit midlife crisis and they're exhausted and depleted and they do a total 180. It's because they are not honoring rest. and their bodies, their biology are screaming at them saying, please slow down.
And of course, this is why we have the myth or the mirage of this tireless leader. the reality is, is nobody is what I call bionic woman. We're not, we're human, we're not superheroes. ⁓ this means that we need to listen to our bodies.
We get to listen to our bodies and our bodies are incredibly wise on when we need to pause. when we need to rest, when we get to receive from our team, from our family, from our communities. This is why we thrive and do better in tribes and in circles and in communities, because we're not meant to do this alone. So let's talk about what I like to call the recovery audit framework.
Yes, you heard me, recovery audit, not financial audit, not marketing audit. We're talking about you because if you as a leader and visionary in your company or you regardless of the job you have as a career holder, if you're not taking care of yourself, you cannot do your job effectively. You cannot show up to inspire others on your team. So we want to shift our perspective from constant viewing Russ as this downtime that's passive.
Your rest is actually a high yield strategic investment, okay? So let's look at your calendar and evaluate, let's do an audit. How much time is go, go, go? How much time is for others versus how much time is rest?
How much time is active recovery? How much time is for you and you alone? And if we look at the ratio here, what does that look like for you? Is it where you want it to be?
Is your body thriving or is it struggling and suffering? And if that's off, what's your plan for shifting that so that the ratio is more balanced and allowing you some space to receive, restore, and get back into more cognitive function? Let's also talk about cognitive ROI. When we rest, we actually get more quality of the time spent doing work.
It's not just about quantity, it's about the quality of our work hours. And for the business owners and leaders I work with, the change makers in the world who value their ROI, they value that rest. They see the value of this cognitive ROI. actually perform better.
They work fewer hours and spend more time resting. And the reason is, is because those hours create so much quality. that they're able to get so much more done and it keeps them in the flow of abundance and then they're incredibly successful. If we can categorize active and passive streams of rest, we're able to ⁓ more neural repair and this ⁓ us have better problem solving capabilities.
I have to tell you the biggest problems that I solve for my company, myself and my clients come to me when I'm sleeping. I go to sleep, I have an issue, I say these are my dreams, I will learn from my dreams, I am in control of my dreams, this is a problem I'm facing right now and I can go to sleep and wake up because your brain is so freaking wise, you don't need to be awake for finding the solutions. And when we can pause and listen to our intuition, our intention and our soul, we get the answers we need versus trying to force.
and trying to drive through it. That doesn't work and that's what creates burnout. Let's instead shift to how can we engineer a stillness advantage? And yes, I mean engineer.
This is not something that happens magically. Stillness, awakefulness and living a balanced life comes from engineered intention. This is not something that magically happens overnight. It's something you get to choose for yourself, create for yourself.
And this means we need to protect time for stillness and time for rest. We need to have space for nonlinear work, for creativity, for fun. This is where innovation comes from. It comes from stillness.
It comes from allowing for flow. It comes from reducing that pressure container of a schedule that's go, go, go, go, go. So the most successful modern brands out there today, they use deliberate rest to maintain a faster pivot speed. And this is how they beat their overextended competitors.
comes from rest. It comes from space. comes from calendar slots that allow for flow. Allow for creativity and creativity comes from rest and flow.
You need to create a protocol for auditing your current calendars for your teams, for your staff and for yourself so that you can eliminate those low value busy work items that prevent high level recovery. That is where innovation, magic and restoration and visionary, truly visionary leadership comes from. ⁓ engineering of your stillness advantage within your company and create a culture that values innovation from ⁓ Let's about how we can lead through the rest revolution. We are in a phase where if we continue on this AI train, we continue on this economic uncertainty, political uncertainty train, and we don't create space for a rest we will become ⁓ We will not be competitive in the market.
You need to create strong recovery habits as a leader. And this means your ability to create a cultural standard for your team efficiency and for long-term talent retention rests ⁓ the rest revolution, pun intended. There is a ripple effect that happens when we have improved decision-making clarity organizational transparency, which creates, of course, more investor confidence because gonna see people showing up to work, people inspired to do their job ⁓ and create in a way that ⁓ gives space to be innovative, to fail fast, to learn, to grow and to thrive.
There's also a psychological shift that's required to stop signaling this busyness factor and to start signaling optimized mental performance. means our KPIs need to reflect the stillness factor. This means that our team meetings need to inherit these new values. This that the culture we are creating needs to have standard operating procedures, ⁓ metrics, and values that reflect this need for stillness, this need for the rest revolution.
believe the companies that inherit this and address this will be the most successful in the next decade. The future of sustainable performance rests on your shoulders as change makers. What see in 2027, and beyond is that the most resilient companies will be those who prioritize human energy management and they compensate for it because it creates more quality of outcomes, quality of innovation, and guess what? It creates more quality of life.
You're gonna have better retention rates, you're gonna have better opportunities, your company will have a competitive advantage. and it will be vulnerable, real and authentic. And that's the beauty. It will be human to human based on relationships and real people.
I want to give you a 30 day challenge today to reposition rest as a non-negotiable. And it should become something that's part of your quarterly business strategy. If you have questions on this, please let us know. We would love to have a Changemaker strategy call with you to help you create that.
30 day timeline to get your culture into a state of rest revolution where ultimate impact happens and where sustainable performance will continue to thrive and grow. again, we have to shift this mandate of, you know, taking constantly of energy, exhausting our brains and not giving space for rest, rejuvenation and flow. There should be mandate that outperforming the market now requires out our competition to maintain our performative edge permanently and sustainably. I hope that this episode resonated with you.
⁓ And course, if you have any questions, we are happy to hop on a Changemaker strategy call with you. ⁓ If this powerful for you, please share it with someone else who needs to hear this message so that they can get back into optimized rest. for optimized performance. you Changemakers, continue being the light out there.
