Scaling hiring operations across retail locations - especially when managing multiple shifts, geographies, and positions - requires rethinking standard processes. Human's approach to retail staffing combines three core elements: embedded leadership (a vice president collaborating directly with the client's talent acquisition team), metrics-driven management (monitoring recs-per-recruiter and SLAs daily and weekly), and AI-enabled screening technology. The latter proved transformational: by automating candidate screening 24/7, the client increased candidate submissions to hiring managers by 4-5x without sacrificing quality or candidate experience. This model addresses a common tension in high-volume hiring - how to expand capacity without overburdening internal TA leadership. Rather than scaling through contract recruiters or pure outsourcing, Human maintains accountability through shared KPIs, process optimization of existing tools, and tech-enabled workflows that accommodate candidates' preferred application times (weekends, off-hours). The approach appeals to retail operators managing geographic spread and shift complexity who need predictable hiring outcomes without expanding their internal team's span of control.
When implemented correctly, AI screening enables 24/7 candidate processing, allowing applicants to apply at their convenience (evenings, weekends) and hiring managers to review qualified candidates faster, resulting in 4-5x more submittals without compromising candidate or hiring quality.
Human embeds a dedicated VP and hiring manager within the client's team to oversee process, align on strategy, and report metrics - avoiding the span-of-control problem of traditional agencies while maintaining accountability through shared KPIs rather than arm's-length outsourcing.
By bringing in external leadership (VP-level) to manage the expanded team, implementing data-driven SLAs and metrics, and automating screening, the internal TA leadership can oversee the partnership without directly managing a larger payroll.
The BAU process doesn't work at scale; you need to rethink sourcing strategy, optimize and integrate technology, implement SLA-based management, and establish process governance - not simply add more recruiters to the existing workflow.
Our reviewer’s read on each dimension, with quotes from the episode.
The episode is almost entirely a vendor sales monologue with minimal actionable insight. The single substantive claim - 4-5x more candidate submittals via AI screening - is stated but never explained mechanistically, and the rest is generic service description.
we not only bring in our resources, we evaluate the process, we bring in technology
the answer is no. Um, not if you do it the right way and you use it in the right way
Every point made is a standard RPO/staffing-agency talking track - leadership alignment, BAU process doesn't work at scale, AI doesn't hurt candidate experience. There is no contrarian or first-principles thinking anywhere in the episode.
If you're operating under your BAU process for hiring when you're in a high volume ramp situation, you've got to rethink it
what makes Human, I believe, uniquely qualified to handle this type of hiring
There is a single speaker who is clearly a company representative delivering a marketing pitch about their own firm's services. No external practitioner, no operator who has run this at scale independently - just a vendor promotional monologue.
one example of a customer where we support this type of hiring, high volume hiring within a retail environment
a customer we've supported for four to five years
The only concrete data point is '4-5x more candidate submittals,' which is unverified and unattributed. No client is named, no technology is named, no dollar figures or granular SLA metrics are shared despite being mentioned in passing.
we were able to bring forth four to five times the candidate submittals to hiring managers than what we would have been able to do without it
we look at the number of recs per recruiter, what our SLAs should be in order to achieve success
This is a solo monologue with zero host involvement, zero follow-up questions, and zero pushback. The speaker literally poses their own softball rhetorical questions and answers them favorably, which is the opposite of conversational craft.
You might be asking and thinking, if you bring in tech enablement AI, is that going to sacrifice the candidate experience? Will that sacrifice the quality of candidate that we're hiring for? And the answer is no.

Send us Fan Mail Scotty Kinn, Chief Sales Officer at Hueman RPO, talks through a real client story: high-volume retail hiring spread across metro and rural markets, and what actually made it work. She gets into why leadership span of control matters as much as headcount, and how bringing in AI and tech-enabled screening (candidates get screened 24/7, not just 9-5) helped this client see 4-5x more candidate submittals to hiring managers. Speaker A: So let's talk about the retail industry. Many customers within Human fall into the retail industry and that we support. Again, this is high volume hiring. Um, within a large geography. Many times there's locations all around the country, both in metropolitan areas, but also in more remote or rural areas. Um, there's a variety of different positions that need to be considered, a variety of different days and shifts that also need to be considered. And so one example of a customer where we support this type of hiring, high volume hiring within a retail environment, um, is a customer we've supported for four to five years. And what makes Human, I believe, uniquely qualified to handle this type of hiring is represented in this example. Um, and I want to point out some differences of what it looks like to partner with a firm like Human versus to partner with an agency where you are working with contract recruiters or maybe you're trying to do this on your own. One of the most important things to think about is the span of control with your leaders and talent acquisition. Not only are you adding resources to your team, you've got to have the right leadership to be able to effectively oversee a larger number of resources and to be able to ensure that the work is getting done when you're operating under a completely different process. If you're operating under your BAU process for hiring when you're in a high volume ramp situation, you've got to rethink it. It's not the way to go. And so many times you know where clients tell us, and this client particularly has shared this with us over the years, that the leadership support has made all the difference. So we not only bring in our resources, we evaluate the process, we bring in technology, we maybe optimize technology that you have in house that you're not using in a, and a capacity of high volume hiring, but we also bring in a vice president who's going to work directly with your leadership team to make certain that we are fully aligned with the best practices in this new process. And that would be for the best candidate experience, for the hiring manager experience, and to make certain that we have the right sourcing strategy and tools in place to onboard so that you meet your hiring goals. Um, you don't have to manage what we're doing. We bring in a manager who is overseeing our team, um, who's rolling out metrics, we look at the number of recs per recruiter, what our SLAs should be in order to achieve success. We're monitoring those daily and weekly and our manager and vice president will be Sharing that back with you and your leadership team so that you have that partnership without expanding that leadership capability and not overworking your leaders in talent acquisition. And that's definitely a key, um, one, um, example of what we've done when it comes to the hiring process with this particular client, it is the AI and the tech enabled screening that I've talked about here. And so as we think about being able to attract a larger volume at the top of the funnel and be able to get that volume screened the right way, we recommended last year that we bring in some tech enabled solutions and AI. Now you might be asking and thinking, if you bring in tech enablement AI, is that going to sacrifice the candidate experience? Will that sacrifice the quality of candidate that we're hiring for? And the answer is no. Um, not if you do it the right way and you use it in the right way. And so one of the things that we have found, especially in retail and shift environment, is that AI and tech enablement screening allows us to screen 24 hours a day, seven days a week. And in this particular situation, we were able to bring forth four to five times the candidate submittals to hiring managers than what we would have been able to do without it. Creating a great candidate experience at the time they needed to do it, the time of day, weekday, weekend, and allowing our hiring managers to be able to accommodate and quickly get them to the table for an interview and be able to secure that top candidate for a job.
