Building a better staffing pipeline for rural New England by reaching a younger audience.

Episode notes

In New England, the rural healthcare crisis is taking on a new form: the workforce can't afford to live where they're needed most. At a New England Rural Health Association gathering, leaders shared how rising housing costs - driven by tourism, second homes, and remote work migration - are pushing out essential healthcare workers. In places like Cape Cod, even recruited physicians have turned down jobs because they couldn't find affordable housing for their families. But the challenge goes deeper. Health systems across the region are facing facility-wide shortages - from physicians and nurses to medical assistants, billing staff, and front desk workers - while caring for older, sicker populations with complex needs. So what's the solution? Many are turning upstream - investing in local workforce pipelines, exposing students to rural healthcare early, and creating pathways for people to train, return, and serve their own communities. Because in rural healthcare, the future workforce won't just be recruited. It has to be grown.
