Send us Fan Mail Minnesota Nordic Ski Opener 2024: Your Guide to Winter's Kickoff Event The unofficial start to Minnesota's winter season kicks off at Elm Creek Park Reserve on December 7th, 2024, with the Minnesota Nordic Ski Opener. In our conversation with Three Rivers Park District staff Amanda Fong, Chelsea Remiger, and Grant Armour, we explored how this beloved event welcomes both newcomers and experienced skiers to the trails. A Celebration of Winter Sport The day begins at 8:00 AM with Skadi's Chase Race, named after the Norse goddess of skiing, followed by a full day of activities running until 3:00 PM. This free community event, which draws around 3,000 attendees, transforms Elm Creek into a winter wonderland thanks to the park's advanced snow-making capabilities. Even in years with little natural snow, Elm Creek's professional grooming team ensures perfect conditions for the opener. Breaking Down Barriers Since its inception in 2017, the Nordic Ski Opener has focused on making the sport accessible to everyone. The event removes common barriers by providing free ski rentals, trail access, and mini lessons.
