We're talking about the AI tools you already have, uh, but most likely aren't using yet. That's right, the apps and software you already pay for are packed with AI features most business owners have never touched. And that's not your fault. These tools were added quietly in updates that most people just clicked remind me later on. So today we're going to go exploring. I'm going to show you where your existing tools are already using AI, how to find those hidden features, and how to start saving real time without spending another dimensional. If you're the kind of business owner who's a little skeptical of AI, this is the episode for you. Because by the end, you'll realize you've been using artificial intelligence for years. You just didn't call it that. Uh, we'll also start with a brief overview of the primary challenges facing new technology today. And it just might surprise you. Speaker A: Okay. We are jumping right in today with the biggest challenges facing new technology, especially when it comes to artificial intelligence. And, and how we, that's the collective we are addressing those challenges. Have you ever wondered how much power artificial intelligence actually uses? I mean, we all know AI is fast, it's impressive, and sometimes even magical. But behind every clever chatbot and image generator is a mountain of computer hardware working around the clock. And all that computing power comes with a catch. It needs an incredible amount of electricity. Today, we're going to talk about what's quietly becoming one of the biggest challenges in technology, and that's how to power the future of AI. So here's the simple version. AI models like ChatGPT and Grok, image generators or voice assistants don't just run on one computer. They run on, um, thousands of powerful chips, all connected in data centers the size of football fields. Those chips are hungry. Each one can use as much electricity as several households. Multiply that by thousands or even hundreds of thousands, and you can see the problem. When Big AI companies train new models. They run those chips nonstop for days or even weeks. That's what allows the AI to learn. And even after that, every time you or I use it to generate text, images or summaries, it still requires energy from those same data centers. So in other words, AI never sleeps. And as it grows, it's demanding more and more power from grids that were never designed for this kind of constant high density load. Right now, global data centers already consume around 3% of the world's electricity. And some projections are saying that AI loan could double that within just a few years. That means more strain on local power grids, more heat to manage, and higher energy costs for everyone. Now you might be thinking, why can't we just build more power plants? Well, um, not so fast. Expanding power capacity takes years of planning approvals and construction. Transmission lines, substations, transformers, they're all limited resources even when power is available. Cooling is another major issue. Those high performance chips generate an enormous amount of heat. And cooling systems, whether air, liquid or otherwise, use, uh, even more electricity. So you're kind of starting to see the problem. So in short, AI is growing faster than our infrastructure can adapt. Now the good news is a lot of smart people are working on this from different angles. So let's look at the main strategies in plain English. Uh, first we want to make the computers themselves more efficient. Chip designers like Nvidia, amd, intel and others are building new processors that can do more work with less power. They're focusing on getting more compute per watt, which means squeezing out as much performance as possible from every drop of electricity. They're also experimenting with new chip materials and designs that reduce waste, uh, reduce heat and speed up communication between parts of the system so less energy is wasted just moving data around. Next, using uh, smaller or smarter AI models. Not every task needs a massive large, uh, language model, uh, AI tool. Many companies are now creating right size models, uh, which are smaller versions that do specific tasks faster and cheaper. Engineers are also trimming down existing models through methods like pruning or compression, making them lighter and less power hungry without losing much accuracy. And some are scheduling workloads during off peak hours or routing them to regions where renewable energy is currently most available. Okay, next. Cooling the systems more intelligently. So cooling has become a science all its own. Instead of relying on traditional air conditioning, new data centers are switching to liquid cooling or even immersion cooling, where components are submerged in special fluid that pull heat away from far more efficiently. Some facilities even reuse, uh, that heat they Channel it into nearby buildings or, uh, heating systems instead of wasting it. Uh, others use AI to manage their own cooling, using the AI tool to predict when temperatures will spike and, uh, adjusting their AC airflow before it even happens. So next, uh, you know, the other option is to, uh, bring power to closer to those data centers. So another major trend is moving data centers closer to the power sources, uh, that are available currently. Um, uh, some are being built next to solar or wind farms, um, so they can use renewable energy directly. Uh, others are investing in on site power generation, like natural gas, micro grids, uh, or hydrogen fuel cells so they don't overload local grids. There's even talk of pairing small modular nuclear reactors with data centers, providing clean, steady base power without the need for massive transmission networks. And to make it all work together, companies are partnering with utility providers to strengthen the grid and expand capacity in the regions where AI infrastructure is growing fastest. The truth is, there's no single fix. It's a combination of better chips, smarter cooling, renewable energy, and careful planning. Each step helps, but the demand for AI is growing so fast that even the improvements can barely keep up. That's why energy efficiency and sustainability are now top priorities for every major AI company. The technology itself isn't just evolving on the software side. It's forcing a complete rethink of how we design power and cool the physical systems that run it. So why should you care? Well, because this challenge will affect everything from the price of running cloud services to Internet speeds, to how soon your favorite apps roll out new features. It's also a wake up call that digital doesn't mean free. Every query, every image, every chatbot reply, it all takes energy somewhere. So that doesn't mean AI is bad. Far from it. But as we build smarter machines, we also have to build smarter infrastructure, cleaner power, better efficiency, and more thoughtful design. And that's exactly where the next wave of innovation will happen. So next time you use an AI tool, remember, it's not magic. It's a massive network of machines and energy working together. The question for all of us, engineers, business owners and citizens, is how we can keep advancing this technology responsibly without breaking the grid that powers it. But I asked her to open her laptop. She pulled up her Gmail. I pointed to that little sparkle icon that appears when you're typing an email. She said, well, what is that thing? And I told her, click it and type. Write a thank you email for a customer referral. And right there, Gmail drafted a professional, warm, perfectly written message in seconds. Her jaw dropped. I've had that this whole time? She asked. Yes, she's had it all along. She just never clicked it. That moment right there is exactly what today's episode is about. Whether you're using Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, Canva, or even your phone, you already have AI running in the background. It's quietly analyzing, predicting, suggesting, and summarizing, all to make your life easier. But because it doesn't shout hey, I'm AI. From the screen, we tend to overlook it. Let's start with the most common tools you already use. If you use Gmail or Outlook, you're already sitting on one of the most powerful AI writing assistants in the world. Let's say you just had a back and forth with a client about scheduling, and the email chain is 12 messages long. Instead of scrolling and rereading, you can literally click one button and see a summary that says client agreed to meet Tuesday at 10. Request an agenda in advance. Done. That's not futuristic AI. That's right there in your inbox on your computer, right now, today. And by the way, this same technology that's summarizing your emails can also help you sound more consistent and professional. You can tell Gmail to make this message sound friendlier or or rewrite this reply to sound confident but concise. The difference it makes in tone and time saved is enormous. If you're a business owner managing dozens of client emails every day, this could save you 20 or 30 minutes before lunch. So the next time you're replying to an email, look for that sparkle icon or Help me write prompt. Click it. Play with it. You can always hit delete if you don't like it, but chances are you'll start using it daily. Now let's move over to where most of us spend way too much Time writing Word and Google Docs have become quietly brilliant. Both now use AI to outline, summarize and edit your content instantly. If you're like most small business owners, writing is one of those, ugh, uh, tasks. You know what you want to say, but it takes forever to make it sound professional. You write something, delete it, rewrite it again, and by the time it's done, it's lost its natural tone. Sound familiar? Well, now you can just tell your document what you want. Literally. You can say, make this paragraph more concise, or write a one paragraph summary of this proposal, or even create an outline for a blog post about our new product launch. And that's what this podcast has always been about, giving you your time back. All right, let's talk about something that usually scares people. Spreadsheets. Excel and Google Sheets have quietly transformed from data tables into full blown analytics assistants. In Excel, you can now ask natural language questions like show me which months had the highest sales or summarize this data into a chart. In Google Sheets, there's a little lightning bolt icon called Explore. Click it and you can literally type in a question like which product had the best margin last quarter and it will give you the answer. You don't have to know formulas, you don't have to know pivot tables. You don't have to upload spreadsheets or data into an AI chat system. You just have to ask right there in your spreadsheet program. This is where the fear of AI replacing people is completely misplaced. AI isn't replacing your judgment or your expertise. It's just making it easier for you to see patterns and make better decisions faster. Think about it. How many times have you delayed reviewing your finances because it felt like too much work? Now you can ask your spreadsheet the question and have the answer in seconds. That's not replacing you, that's empowering you. Let's move on to marketing, because this is where a lot of small business owners are already halfway there. If you've used Canva recently, you've probably seen the new Magic Write or Magic Design options. You can literally type create a social media post about our customer appreciation event and Canva will design layouts, choose fonts, and write the caption that's AI. Same thing with hootsuite and Buffer. Their analytics dashboards now use AI to tell you what time to post for the best engagement and even recommend caption styles that perform better. One of my clients runs a bakery. She used Canva's Magic Write to draft her Instagram captions for the week, then just tweaked them to sound more personal. What used to take her two hours on Sunday night now takes 20 minutes. That's the real power here. Not automation for the sake of it, but time recovered for the things that actually matter. When AI handles your repetitive marketing tasks, you can focus on connecting with your customers, the part of your business that no algorithm can ever replace. Now here's the part that surprises most people. Your phone. Whether you use an iPhone or Android, your phone is loaded with AI tools that you're not using. Siri and Google Assistant can now summarize text, schedule appointments, take notes, and even remind you of patterns. Like you usually call this supplier on Thursdays. And those automatic photo enhancements? That's AI, too. When your camera brightens faces or removes background clutter, it's using machine learning models to detect what you want to see most clearly. But here's one of my favorite tricks. When you're driving or walking and you get an idea, open your notes app and dictate it. The AI transcription is now so accurate you can turn that note into a blog post or podcast outline later. I do this all the time.
