Episode notes

This episode is different from anything TechDental has published before. No AI angle. No investment thesis. No technology story. 56,143 children and young people were admitted to NHS hospitals in England last year for tooth extractions under general anaesthetic. It is the single biggest cause of childhood hospital admissions in this country. Not accidents. Not acute illness. Teeth. And it is almost entirely preventable. Nicki Rowland is a practice manager, not a dentist. She wrote a children's book with her daughter. What followed was a nationally recognised charity with parliamentary backing, two appearances in the House of Commons, BBC coverage, and an Adopt-a-School programme pairing dental practices with the schools and communities that need them most. Her team includes a magician from Derren Brown's circle, a former Good Morning Britain senior producer, and 12 internationally acclaimed chefs contributing to a charity cookbook. She runs the charity with a part-time PA. This is a reminder of what the profession is actually for. What you will hear in this episode: How a children's book became a nationally recognised charity with parliamentary backing in under three years.
